Voter Rights Restoration -- Sign the Petition

This Sunday, during the Social Justice Report, you will be asked to take copies of the Voter Rights  restoration petition home with you and get 2 or 3 people to sign them. You can then either bring them  back to the Social Justice Table or can send them directly to the address on the petition. If you are not  coming to UUC this Sunday, here is a link that you can print out and have people sign. Because it is a  state petition that must have written signatures, this must be done on paper and not online.

Beyond UUC...
FOR UUC’S SOCIAL JUSTICE DEFENDERS OF DEMOCRACY:

If you’re interested in supporting recent attempts to defend our democracy by KEEPING BIG MONEY  OUT OF LOCAL POLITICS, you have an opportunity to stand up by making a showing for the  following in St Petersburg – and you don’t have to live there to help make the statement…

You’re invited to show up on Thursday morning, June 22 nd , at St Pete’s City Hall, 175 5 th Street N  for a 7:30 AM Rally in front before the meeting at 8 – wearing RED if possible. You’re presence is hotly  desired for this preliminary hearing by the committee of the whole, because if St Pete’s City Council  ultimately votes to pass a law prohibiting corporate and foreign entities from using super PACS to buy its  elections, there’s a good chance other cities in Pinellas may do the same. Because it is a committee  meeting of the whole, attendees cannot speak, but a massive turnout, especially wearing red, will speak  eloquently!
There is a Facebook event page for this and you’re invited to sign up in advance, if possible:   https://www.facebook.com/events/226666507830752/

There is an opportunity to speak directly to the city council and major for those who do live in St  Pete at the Mayor’s Budget Summit on Monday, June 19 th at 6 PM at the Coliseum on 535 4 th  Avenue N., St Pete on your view of keeping big money out of St Pete’s politics and keep corporations  from distorting local priorities.

Hoping to see all loyal UUC devotees of representative democracy in the week ahead….

Watch Online Two General Assembly Racial Justice Lectures -- June 22nd and 24th.

Fahs Lecture at General Assembly, Thursday June 22, 2017 from 2:30 to 3:45 pm ET.

Robin DiAngelo "What Does It Mean to Be White? Seeing the Racial Water Post-Civil Rights" It will be recorded and you can watch later from http://www.lreda.org/sophia-lyon-fahs-lecture. You can also watch live from your home computer at UUA.org/ga/2017

What does it mean to be white in a society that proclaims race meaningless yet is deeply divided by race? Dr. DiAngelo will describe the way race shapes the lives of White people, explain what makes racism so hard for White people to see, and identify common White racial patterns that prevent us from moving towards greater racial equity. Weaving information, analysis, stories, images, and familiar examples, she provides the framework needed to develop white racial literacy. Although the focus is on white racial identity development, people of color may also find the analysis valuable as it is one that is rarely affirmed or provided in mainstream society.

Ware Lecture at General AssemblySaturday, June 24, 2017,  9:30 to 10:30 p.m. ET. Bryan Stevenson  the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama.  Watch live from your home computer at UUA.org/ga/2017    Available via live streaming video only;  it will not be recorded or available for on-demand viewing later http://www.uua.org/ga/program/highlights/ware-lecture
