How does it work?
Experts register through the Roster of Experts of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage

Relevant individuals registered in the roster are contacted by the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism to contribute their expertise in undertaking specific activities of the workplan of the Committee

If contacted experts are interested in working with the Committee as invited, voluntary technical work begins .
What are the potential areas of work?
The Executive Committee invites voluntary expert contributions under the following three strategic workstreams of its workplan:

  • Slow onset events which include increasing temperature, desertification, loss of biodiversity, land and forest degradation, glacial retreat, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and salinization;

  • Non-economic losses which may include life, health, human mobility, territory, cultural heritage indigenous knowledge, societal/cultural identity biodiversity, and ecosystem services;

  • Comprehensive risk management approaches which include assessment, reduction, transfer and retention.

What is the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage?
The Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage promotes the implementation of approaches to address loss and damage associated with climate change impacts, in a comprehensive, integrated and coherent manner. It is established under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and is the main vehicle to implement Article 8 of the Paris Agreement.
Its functions are to enhance knowledge and understanding; strengthen dialogue, coordination, coherence and synergies among relevant stakeholders; and enhance action and support, in addressing loss and damage associated with climate change impacts.

The implementation of the Warsaw International Mechanism is guided by the Executive Committee through its workplan with the support of thematic technical expert groups whose members are drawn from the roster of experts of the Warsaw International Mechanism.
