        Happy February and Happy Valentines Day! The Spicy Olive is the perfect place for "lovely" Heart Healthy gifts but now that we have skin care products, gifts that pamper! We have a new cookbook in the stores that is a great companion to our olive oils and vinegars and would make a very thoughtful gift. 
   Our feautured flavors of the month are Blood Orange olive oil and Cranberry Pear balsamic vinegar and there are several recipes in this newsletter which use those varieties. 
 Are you a chocolate lover looking for something to do Saturday, Feb.6, 2015?  Chocolate in the Chapel is this Saturday at the Norman Chapel at Spring Grove Cemetery from 12-4pm. The Spicy Olive will be there as well as many other local chocolate crafters sampling their products. What a great event for Valentine's season!
 

 

Spicy Olive February Recipes :
 
A Valentine's Treat: Dark Espresso Balsamic Truffles


2 TBSP The Spicy Olive's Espresso Dark Balsamic Vinegar
10 oz. high quality 60% cocoa bittersweet chocolate chips
1 can sweetned condensed milk, 14 ounces
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 TBSP unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

In a microwave safe bowl, combine all ingredients except cocoa
and stir. Microwave 1 minute. Stir and microwave an additional 30 seconds. remove from microwave, stir and set aside.
Prepare an 8x8 inch pan, greased and lined with waxed paper. Make sure the wax paper extends over the side of the 8x8 pan.
Pour mixture in pan and refrigerate for 2 hours. When firm but moldable, scoop out a small portion with a teaspoon and shape into small balls the size of a large cherry. Set on waxed paper.
Place cocoa powder in a shallow bowl and roll truffles in the powder until well coated. Set on waxed paper until ready to serve.
   Raspberry, Strawberry, Coconut or Dark Chocolate balsamic would also be delicious in this recipe for a variation if you do not like coffee.
   The truffles could also be dipped in melted chocolate to coat instead of rolling in cocoa powder. For a taste treat try adding a little Blood Orange olive oil (1-2 teaspoons) to the melted chocolate and dip the truffles for an orange flavor!

The Spicy Olive's Orange Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Sift together:
1&3/4 cups all purpose flour
2&1/2 tsp. double acting baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
Blend until creamy:
1/3 cup The Spicy Olive's Blood Orange olive oil
2/3 cup sugar
2-3 tsp. water
Beat in: 
1 beaten egg
1&1/2 cup ripe banana pulp
Add sifted ingredients to the wet ingredients in 3 equal parts. Fold in 1/3 cup broken walnut pieces(optional) and 1/3 cup semi sweet chocolate morsels. Place in a greased bread pan and bake in a 350 degree ovne for 45 minutes to 1 hour.




The Spicy Olive's Cranberry Pear Gorgonzola Cheese Salad
 This is one of our most popular salads and since the Vinaigrette ingredients are the flavors of the month I thought it would be good to feature this recipe:

1 package mixed field greens
2 ripe pears or a 1/2 cup Craisins or both
1/4 cup chopped wlanuts
5 oz. crumbled Gorgonzola cheese 
Place field greens in salad bowl, top with Gorgonzola cheese, pears and walnuts.
Dressing:
1/4 cup The Spicy Olive's Blood Orange olive oil
1/4 cup The Spicy Olive's Cranberry Pear balsamic vinegar
salt and pepper to taste
Whisk together vinegar and oil and pour over salad. Toss until evenly coated and serve. Enjoy!

The Spicy Olive has shampoo, conditioner, shaving soap, soap, body wash, candles and an unbelievable soothing balm. These items arrived December 1st and I am already addicted to the Lemon Scented Tea Tree Soothing Balm. My winter chapped skin loves it! 

These products are all natural with essential oils added to fragrance them. Body wash is available in Peppermint, Rose Geranium and Lavender, Shampoo and Conditioner in Rose Geranium

Class has a Valentine's Day theme. Menu: Braised Pork Shank Empanada, Spring mix salad with figs, cashews & Truffle Vinaigrette, Lobster, shrimp,crab cake ravioli, and Chocolate peanut butter mascarpone cheese cake.The cost of the class is $45.00 per person and includes tasting the foods prepared, recipes, and wine pairings.

6:30-8:30 pm
Menu: Shrimp Scampi Style, Fried Goat Cheese Salad with Roasted Beets and Cranberry Pear/Blood Orange Vinaigrette, Braised Beef Short Rib served with Truffle Gorgonzola Mashed Potatoes and Smoked Pinot Noir Salted Caramel Creme Brulee. The cost of this class is $45.00 per person and includes tasting of the foods prepared, recipes and wine pairings.




Tastings & Pairings Class
 - 
the next Tasting and Pairings Class will be Sunday, February 22nd and will focus on eating healthy in the New Year using Olive
Oils and Vinegars. The class will be from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at the West Chester store and costs $35 per person. The class includes recipes, tastings of the foods 
prepared and a 60 ml bottle of balsamic vinegar to take home. Recipes to be prepared: Hummus with Flavored Pita chips, Quinoa Salad, Sesame Pasta Salad with Chicken and a dessert.
 
    This class will also be held at the Hyde Park store on March 8 from 1pm-3pm.

February Flavors of the Month:  Cranberry Pear white balsamic vinegar and Blood Orange olive oil

 Each month The Spicy Olive will feature flavors of the month! This month the featured products are our Cranberry Pear White Balsamic vinegar and our Blood Orange olive oil. Put these two together for a delicious salad dressing! Great with mixed greens, gorgonzola cheese, dried cranberries or a chopped fresh pear and walnuts! What a delcious combination!
    Blood Orange Brownies are a great treat for Valentine's Day. Just take your favorite boxed brownie mix and substitute Blood Orange olive oil for the vegetable oil called for in the recipe. It make a wonderful moist brownie with a delicious hint of orange! Use Blood Orange olive oil to roast sweet potatoes!

   Casual Tastings every Friday evening 4-8:00pm and Saturday afternoons 12-5:00pm. Monthly Tasting the 3rd Wednesday of every other month.
