"Servant Leadership" and Emotional Intelligence

Triangle Speech Services is the private, professional practice of Judith L. Bergman, a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in foreign accent and regional dialect modification.  I offer customized, individual tutorials to corporate-sponsored and self-enrolled individuals who speak English fluently but with moderate to severe accents that create challenges and frustrations in the workplace.
An announcement boomed over the huge Pennsylvania Convention Center's Exhibit Hall on Saturday, November 19 during the lunch break of the final day of the 2016 annual convention of the American Speech and Hearing Association:  the final count of attendees was a record number of OVER 16,800!!
The theme of the convention was Everyday Leadership; Leadership Everyday. I had selected my sessions out of the hundreds offered, with the hope that I could gain useful knowledge as well as the CEUs (Continuing Education Units) required to maintain my Clinical Certification.
This month I am sharing some notes from a session titled Dream More, Learn More, Do More, Become More: Leadership Lessons from the CLC (ASHA Committee on Leadership Cultivation).
In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins defines five levels of leadership: Level 1- Highly Capable Individual, Level 2-Contributing Team Member, Level 3-Competent Manager, Level 4-Effective Leader, Level 5- Executive.  Most of my accent modification clients appear to be at Levels 1 and 2 and almost all want to advance at least to levels 3 and 4.  AND many of them already demonstrate the non-linguistic qualities of emotional intelligence found in a true "servant-leader."  As you scan the lists below, think of how many of the other leadership qualities actually depend on clear and confident speaking skills.

The Servant-Leadership Model

"While the idea of servant leadership goes back at least two thousand years, the modern servant leadership movement was launched by Robert K. Greenleaf in 1970 with the publication of his classic essay, The Servant as Leader. It was in that essay that he coined the words 'servant-leader' and 'servant leadership.'  Servant leadership is not about being servile; it is about having a sincere desire to serve. Important characteristics of servant leadership include: listening and understanding; acceptance and empathy; foresight; awareness and perception; persuasion; conceptualization; self-healing; and rebuilding community."
An up-to-date resource is The Servant Leadership Model: Leadership Principles to Boost Performance by Inspiring Greatness by Alan Hendrickson (2016).

Emotional Intelligence

An emotionally intelligent leader:
  • Takes time to personally reflect
  • Uses criticism and feedback from others for self-improvement
  • Notices how others feel; empathizes with people
  • Builds trust by being reliable and sincere
  • Believes that leadership is serving others

We invite you to visit us by clicking on Triangle Speech Services .  Our goal is always to provide information, inspiration, and encouragement since these are essential components of any successful learning experience.
The initial goal of an accent modification tutorial is to identify the main obstacles to a clear, convincing speaking style in American English. These include sound errors, intonation (word stress) errors, speaking too quickly and grammatical errors. Then a systematic program is tailored to the needs of each client and key resources are provided as described above. Last, progress during practice is monitored closely, not only in the twice monthly in-person sessions, but through online review of daily recorded practice when applicable.
If you are seriously considering enrolling yourself or an employee in an individual tutorial with us or simply want to talk to us about our programs, please contact us through the contact page of our web site, and we hope you also take the time to read the text and look at the videos.
