Big Data Alliance Conference
Einstein's Alley Board Member, Peggy Brennan, in her role as Chair of the NJ Big Data Alliance with 17 member universities, ran an excellent day long conference at TCNJ on April 30th. The organization is designated by the NJ Legislature as the state's research, education, and technology consortium to advance data-driven innovation. There were informative presentations on Health Data, and Next Generation Competencies.
Einstein's Alley is proud that it will become a Marketing Partner with the NJBDA.
Matthew Segelman CEO of Burning Glass Technologies provided some fascinating workforce data which added to ideas we've been sharing at our Future of Work Institutes.
According to Sigelman, "there were 74,000 data analytics postings in the New York-Newark metropolitan statistical area (MSA) over the last 12 months, with 22,000 in the Philadelphia-Camden MSA, and 4,000 in the Trenton-Mercer MSA." He joked, you could change the famous slogan to
Trenton Computes The World Salutes.
His remarks presented a powerful picture of the importance of data analytics in jobs of the future.

EDA Announces Exciting New Initiative
New Jersey unveiled a comprehensive database of scientific research from five prominent New Jersey universities on June 5th at BIO International, the world's largest gathering of the biotechnology industry. University leaders joined officials from New Jersey's Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE) and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA) to announce the newly created "Research with NJ" database, which will provide access to the State's cutting-edge research assets, with the goal of strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.
Research with NJ is a free portal that showcases New Jersey's experts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), including their professional backgrounds, publications, and achievements. The portal is structured and branded in such a way to encourage collaboration between entrepreneurs, businesses, and New Jersey's academic research institutions. The portal can be accessed at

Census 2020
Einstein's Alley Advisory Council Member, Nick Montalto, and Katherine Kish attended the Census 2020 Meeting organized by the Fund for NJ led by Kiki Jamison.
The meeting stressed the importance of accurate Census data for the business community, for legislative apportionment, for allocation of federal funding. The question around citizenship proposed by the Trump Administration will have a negative effect on response especially among immigrant populations. This initiative is a natural for Einstein's Alley to support because of our work with NJIEA Coalition supporting comprehensive immigration reform and with the Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards.

What Is Census 2020 and Why Does It Matter for New Jersey?
The census is a count of all United States residents required by The U.S. Constitution every 10 years to determine
Congressional districts. The census is an essential policy tool. The federal government depends on census data to allocate resources, state governments use census data to draw legislative districts and to direct spending, and academics, nonprofits, and businesses rely on census data to inform and direct their work. Almost everything we know about our population and our communities comes from information collected during the decennial census and its related surveys.
When New Jersey residents are not counted, the state loses funding and influence. For New Jersey, allocations from 16 large federal assistance programs (including Medicaid, SNAP, housing vouchers, and education grants) are derived from the census count. In FY2015, the state received $17.56 billion dollars in federal grants from these 16 programs alone,1 an amount about half the size of the entire New Jersey state budget. Further, New Jersey lost a Congressional seat in 2013 after losing another in 1993. New Jersey now has 12 congressional districts, the lowest number since 1933, which limits the state's impact on federal decisions.

KidGooRoo won the night in a presentation by Co-Founder & CEO Alex Skove, who described her business model as "the Yelp for kids' extra-curricular activities". KidGooRoo has emerged as the #1 online resource for parental review of their children's real-life afterschool activities. The free site helps parents partner with neighborhood businesses to help school-age kids gravitate toward the passions that will positively shape their futures.

The Board of Directors of Choose New Jersey, Inc., announced that Jose Lozano, Chief of Staff and Vice President for Corporate Services and Governance of Hackensack Meridian Health, will join the economic development organization as its President and CEO on June 1. Lozano will succeed Michele Brown, who served as President and CEO of Choose New Jersey since February 2015.
