Special Friends,
Alpha Dog at my shop Wednesday, was DC's Justice League #13, the follow up to the now famous Superman / Wonder Woman kiss issue, a book that received massive mainstream press & brought in new faces, lapsed fans & all the regulars. My shop's next best seller SHOULD have been Catwoman #13 but I grossly under-ordered. (re-order coming next week)
Joker ain't NO joke. The darlings of the industry right now are the infamous "Bat-13's": "Death of the Family" is a Batman cross over spinning out of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's relaunched Batman title, featuring Joker's return to Gotham City.
The first three (4?) parts have sold out at the distributor level & are selling for $10+ ea on Ebay.
Red hood & the Outlaws #13 contained an unannounced Joker appearance & sold out at the distributor level.
The money books are the "mask" covers ( Only the first part of ea title in the crossover.)
To clarify: Batman #13 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #14, #15, #16, #17 are NOT Batgirl #13 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #14, #15, #16, are NOT Catwoman #13 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #14 is NOT Suicide Squad #14 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #15 is NOT Batman & Robin #15 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #16 is NOT Red Hood & the Outlaws #15 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #16 is NOT Detective #15 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #16 is NOT Nightwing #15 is a die cut Joker mask cover. #16 is NOT Teen Titans #15 is a die cut Joker mask cover.
There will be 9 die cut Joker mask covers.
The News that Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D TV series has been green lit is sure to effect a few back issues in the next year.
1st appearance Agent Coulston is the Battle Scars #6, it brought Phil Coulson, a movie character into the mainstream Marvel Universe. In the sixth and final issue, the character codenamed "Cheese" is revealed to be Phil Coulson.
I had the pleasure of attending New York Comicon this past weekend. The big news: was that Peter Parker will NOT be Dan Slott's Superior Spider-Man, once Amazing ends with #700!
The news has sparked massive online & in store debate as to the identity of the new Spidey.
Why do I think that Amazing Spider-Man #365 is a great buy? I have reason to believe that Miguel O'Hara is Superior Spider-Man. Yep. Spider-Man 2099. Start digging through those quarter boxes. His first appearance is ASM #365. A VERY affordable book.
Some other notes from NYCC:
Blank sketch covers were in demand at $5-$10 ea. The most popular was Batman #0. EVERYBODY wanted a Joker sketch.
There seemed to be less comic dealers this year, & that set the stage for incredible sales. Ton of Gold, Silver, Trades & discount material, but new comics from the last couple of years were tough to find.
DC New 52 #4's were on EVERYBODY'S want list. I have NO idea why this number seems so scarce across the board.
Harley Quinn appearances were the #1 modern wall books at the show.
Based on the sheer numbers of Super Mario cos-players at the con, a publisher would do very well to secure the license for comics.
Image had a show exclusive of Bedlam #1 that sold out instantly. $5-$10 at the show it is $25+ on E bay already.
Uncanny Avengers sold "OK". Retailers ordered it like it would sell like DC's New 52. It only sold like a good Marvel comic.
Shows form a Micro economic bubble that bursts after the show. Example: Batgirl #13 was $10, then $15, then $20 & I saw one sell for $40. ( back in the real world it's still cover price-$15)
Valiant is outsmarting everyone by producing limited versions of their books for themselves. ( Gold & blank ). Collectors are starting to shy away from their material. Many readers are trade waiting.
Walking Dead fans were paying top dollar for back issues, that were surprisingly scarce at a show of that size.
The Lookouts #1 is currently out of stock at the Distributor level. I love books that have existing fan bases that are potentially new customers for the existing comic market. Penny Arcade is huge. Very few have made their way to E-Bay. #2 shipped this week.
Respectable sellers worth watching:
Black Kiss #2 ( 1st preview of Grant Morrison's Happy ) Chew #29 Giarrusso variant. The Lookouts #1 ( New book from Penny Arcade creators) Skottie Young Marvel Now baby variants Walking Dead #103 Giarrusso variant. Hawkeye #1-3 ( buzzz ) Ex Sanguine #1 ( New Tim Seeley )
A lot of people ask me why I like to speculate on modern comic books. Original Art, Gold, Silver & Bronze age comics are a much better investment. I'm a comic book fan, a voracious reader of new material. I love how new books set the pace for back issues. It is fast paced & never stagnant due to the constant release of new material. Right now modern comics are the petri dish of pop culture, comic shops the breeding ground.
