Aloha!
For more than 20 years, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center has brought performing artists to the stage on Maui ... but we also bring our artists beyond the limits of the stage: out and about, around the island from Hana to the West Side, and to the islands of Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i. The MACC's Artists in the Community program brings free performances to schools, senior centers, and social service agencies all around Maui Nui.
In other words,
people who may not have the opportunity or resources to come to the MACC, may find the MACC coming to them!
See below for various examples of how these valuable exchanges of ideas, information, and inspiration are taking place around Maui, all part of the MACC's commitment to community.
I look forward to seeing you @ the MACC ... or maybe when the MACC comes to
you

Off the Stage and into the Community
The MACC’s Artists in the Community Program
|
|
On March 17, prior to his sold-out concert at the MACC's Castle Theater, Jake Shimabukuro visited with Maui people at:
P.O.I. Program: Positive Outreach Intervention
Assists juveniles who are learning about the consequences of negative choices
KALO Program
Culturally-based curriculum to assist families with communication and parenting skills,
building self-esteem, and making healthy choices
(programs facilitated by Maui Police Department)
|
|
Roselani Place
Independent and assisted-living
community for seniors
|
|
Aloha House
Provides outpatient and residential treatment to individuals with addictions and comprehensive, family-centered behavioral health interventions
|
|
Not only did Jake play for the residents in recovery at Aloha House, but he invited them to play with him! He jammed and riffed along with residents on their own original songs, offering not only
words
of encouragement but
actions
of affirmation through his involvement in their impromptu music-making session.
Rolling Stone
magazine has called Jake Shimabukuro an "'Ukulele Hero"... but the sum total and positive effects of moments like these surely extend even beyond his own superpowers!

These “up-close-and-personal” engagements with globally recognized performers allow Maui people from all walks of life to experience
the transformative power of the arts.
In return, our visiting artists feel the strength of aloha from our community.
Last year alone: 13,928 people were served in MACC's Artists in the Community program, through 161 events in community centers, social agencies, and school shows throughout Maui County

Connecting with the Community
"Concert for Our Lives"
|
|
On Saturday, March 24, MACC's A&B Amphitheater was the site of a unique event: the
Concert for our Lives,
held in conjunction with the march and rally centered at UH-Maui College and part of the nationwide day against violence in schools.
This event carries yet another indicator about the power of the arts, which can be more than 'just' entertainment. Here, the motive was to encourage activism, with student speeches, spoken word and song creations, voter registration, and advocacy.
The MACC is a venue for this kind of sharing as well.
