We're 70% of the way to our goal!

We believe that economic development and stewardship of our historic downtown go hand in hand, which is why Main Street Skowhegan's staff and volunteers support the work our downtown merchants do to improve their buildings. As part of our upcoming Decade of Development anniversary, we are celebrating the accomplishments of these and other projects. We are already 70% of the way toward our $10,000 goal for the end of the year. Help us reach that goal by making a tax-deductible gift today!

An example of our impact: second story revitalization

When Karen Lewia of The Children's Cottage bought her Water Street building in 2013, the upper two stories had been vacant for years. Conditions had deteriorated on those floors, but Karen saw the opportunity for renewal.

"Upstairs was in rough shape, but I knew that with some investment I could fill the spaces," Karen said.

Main Street Skowhegan applied for and received a $15,000 grant from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation to kickstart the rehabilitation process, which leveraged more than $100,000 of Karen's own investment. Deteriorating storage rooms for leftover furniture were turned into a multi-use studio now inhabited by Midge's Theater Arts Studio, Kid Friendly Photo, a Pilates instructor, and a yoga instructor.

Another room on Karen's second floor was rehabilitated to serve as a community exercise room. Main Street Skowhegan secured grant funding to acquire equipment and a key card system so downtown employees and residents can access the room for their improved wellness.

This is just one of many projects that Man Street Skowhegan facilitates to make downtown more vibrant and sustainable.
