Board Applies for & Receives $25 Million TIGER Grant From U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Elaine Chao!

March 30, 2018

As you know, the Board has been working hard to fund design and construction of the $88 million Northstar Boulevard project (Shreveport Drive - Rt 50).

As such, I'm happy to report that Loudoun has been awarded $25 million in federal TIGER Grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This is significant as it is the first time northern Virginia has received this type of award and the first time ever it has been awarded to a locality rather than a state. It was also 1 of only 41, out of 450 projects nationwide to be awarded funding under the program.

This money, combined with other local and state revenue already secured, brings the total project funding level to more than 60%. In addition, the Board has an active application with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for the remaining revenue needed to fully fund the project. It is expected that VDOT will soon make award decisions, at which point we will be informed of the results.

Northstar is currently in the design, environmental permitting and right-of-way acquisition phases with construction expected to begin in Spring of 2022 and end in Summer of 2024; however, I will soon be meeting with County staff in an effort to accelerate that timeline.

In addition to Secretary Chao, I would like to thank Congresswoman Comstock as we would not have received this award had it not been for her position on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and her consistent lobbying of Secretary Chao for this much needed funding.

As always, I will keep you informed as additional information becomes available.

All my best,
