News from Deborah Maris Lader

Issue No.14 (yes, I have ISSUES)

Hey People!! Welcome to Deb's World, volume 14. It's been a whole year since I sent one of these things, but unlike the guvmint, I've remained operational...
First up, in no particular order:
OTS full ptg
I was THRILLED to be chosen to create a piece of public art
(see above) for the new building of the Old Town School Of Folk Music in Chicago, to be unveiled on

Saturday, November 2, at 2pm (you're invited!)
East building, 4545 N Lincoln Avenue
The piece, a 12.5 foot wide oil painting and encaustic on board, took me 10 months to create, so it's kind of like an overdo baby who has finally come out to play. It's called "Long Ago Cradle Song", and it sort of reads like a scroll, singing an ethereal story of transformation and love. This commission was made possible by a generous donation from the Choy/Krieg Family. Here are a few details of the piece:

and...
Have you ever heard of an art brownie?
It's a a cute, three-dimensional brownie size object that is created, not baked by artists. They are delicious, but you can only eat them with your eyes. They do not take up much wall space, and they will not give you the munchies like that treat I had in '79. Last year, I won the award for "best art brownie" at the INDEXG Gallery in Toronto, so this year I was invited to submit a whole bunch of little painted "brownies" for their "ZOO" exhibit. If you're in Toronto, you can see them in person. If you're not, here's a peek:

If you go to this link and click on my name, you can see really nice images of
my whole collection. You can even buy one if you're feeling frisky.
Can you see how my big trip to INDIA influenced these little guys?

So HERE'S a cool thing...I just got this print in the mail by the wonderful and talented Parisian artist Christine Gendre-Bergere, who has embarked on a very ambitious series of images of women printmakers. I wonder who this one is...???

Other misc news:

The online mag ARTSLANT chose this print as a showcase winner in the drawing category. Apparently they didn't have a printmaking category (what's up with that?). Check it out...

Working on Wings NEW

"Working On Wings To Fly", etching, 24 x 18 inches

HEAVE MEDIA did a nice little piece about the CPC and our summer SOUNDCHECK exhibition. It's full of images from the show,

which featured some of my fave printmaker/musician buddies. Read it here. This color lithograph was in the show:

Wholes, 3-color lithograph, 12 x 12 inches, 2013

My talented son Evan Silver humored his old mom by making
a movie of the process that went into creating this image, so if you ever wanted to see stone lithography in action, here's your chance!

If you just happen to be vacationing in Bowling Green, Ohio and you're a fan of the bard, check out our group show, curated by Anne Farley Gaines,
Maureen Warren and Robert Kameczura:

"As They Like It: Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare"
It just opened, and you can view it through November 22 in the
Willard Wankelman Gallery at Bowling Green University. I have two pieces in it, and one of them was just featured in this article in the Toledo Blade.
tazing of the Shrew
"The Tazing of the Shrew", solarplate etching and guache

If you get lost on the way to Ohio and end up in Shreveport, LA, then you can see some of my prints at the Norsworthy Gallery, a nice lookin' place that just took me into their artist stable this year. And no, it's not a barn.
 ******************************************************************

If you prefer the safety of your couch to traveling around the country getting lost, you can actually catch some of my prints and paintings in a new TV series called SIRENS. If you ever find out when it airs on the USA network, let me know. You can also see some of my prints hanging in "Molly's bar" on the show Chicago Fire on NBC, alongside work of other Chicago print peeps like Dan Grzeca.

 In MUSIC news...

Sons of the Never Wrong has a brand new WEBSITE!
We're still tweaking it, but we like it and are grateful to our hired
webmaster, Bruce Roper, who we got for cheap. We also got a really
good deal with Scott Demel, the photographer who did our latest photo shoot, who just happens to be married to Sue. As for me, I really didn't
do squat except to freeze my ass off in my summer dress and
provide some free artwork.

Sons has some really groovy gigs coming up in November:

November 8: Davenports Piano Bar and Cabaret
1383 N. Milwaukee Ave. 8pm show. Tickets $12
We highly recommend reservations for this: 773-278-1830

www.davenportspianobar.com

November 9: Maple Street Chapel Concert Series

5 West Maple St, Lombard, IL. 7:30pm show. Tickets $15

We're working on a whole new crop of songs that we'd like to harvest soon at a gig near you. If you want to buy CDs, posters and t-shirts, we can fix you up here. These things make very nice Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, birthday, thank you, birth, Purim, solstice and Casimer Pulaski Day gifts.

we just love this quote about the cd from Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange:

And then there's Tornado, undoubtedly the best song I've heard all this long, anxious year. A hard bop (yes, hard bop!) jazz swirl that you hope won't let up until it lifts you up in its gale and you fly-exultant-beyond human boundary-whooping it up alongside the Sons' two leading ladies.

O-M-G... did you really just waste your valuable time reading this?? You won't get THAT 15 minutes back! Ok, be honest, did you skip down to the bottom just for the arty freebie? If so, it's ok, I do love this part...

detail, "Long Ago Cradle Song"
If you read this through to the end (or if you only read the end, ha!), I would like you to email me at [email protected] with your name & address. I will send you a hand-printed blank postcard in the mail. Suitable for framing or sending along (I like to encourage this thing we used to call "writing letters"). Put the word "longwinded" in the subject line. A healthy and happy November to you all. I am so thankful that you're in my orbit.
