Letter from our Directors

Dear JDA Friends -

One of the most valuable lessons we can teach our campers is how to be resilient. Life is inherently full of hardship and challenge. It's how we face those challenges that determines our success and happiness in life.

American poet, Douglas Malloch, wrote a poem titled, "Good Timber." Here is a portion of it.

Good timber does not grow with ease,
The stronger wind, the stronger trees.
The further sky, the greater length.
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.

We know that it's the difficult things we work through at camp that make it such a valuable experience. Learning how to do hard things is what builds and strengthens our character. Learning how to work as a team, working hard to earn a place in a "club", overcoming feelings of homesickness or insecurity, trying again and again to get up on water-skies-these are all hard things. As we " hang in there" and persevere, we become stronger. There is no doubt about it.

As camp directors, we have the rewarding opportunity to see our girls develop into women, full of faith, endurance, courage and confidence. It's very hard work...but the payoff is sweet.

We are eagerly looking forward to summer 2016. We would love to hear from a few more of you about joining our Alumni Share program, and of course we would love to see you all at the 95th reunion on Aug. 12-14th.

Have a very happy spring and summer!

Warmly,
Sandy and Randy Abbott

Update: Summer 2016
The countdown is on! With just about 100 days until the start of summer 2016, we are busy and excited!  We are well under way to having our staff hired, including counselors from the US, China, Ghana, Spain and Canada. And the camper registrations are beginning to consistently roll in as well. We are on target to surpass last years camper numbers with a very bright future ahead. It has been our great pleasure to travel to many camp parties, reunions and fairs (photo: Montreal Camp Fair, February 2016) and to have met with many camper families, alumnae and prospective campers. We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our hosts: Meg Joyce, Michelle Sloan, Eleanor Storch, Heather Beaver, Kim Whalen, Kristen and Amanda Brooker, Ana Maria and Sofia Young, Geraldine Colon, Fer Leon and Fabi Jimenez.

Our heartfelt thank you for your continued support of JDA,
Sandy and Randy Abbott
Alumni Program
Thank you to our many alumni who have offered to help with camp.  In this blog,  Calling All Alumnae , there are specific things that you can do, as an alumni, to support Camp Jeanne d'Arc. One of the easiest things you can do is to  share and like social media posts. The more people who see our message the more campers to experience Camp Jeanne d'Arc.  Other ways you can help include donating costumes and used sporting equipment and musical instruments and scheduling a trip to camp to share your talent with campers and/or donate your time coordinating alumni volunteers.

Jehanne McIntyre Edwards (camper '65-76', counselor/staff '77-'99 (on and off), owner/director 2005-2015)
Jehanne is enjoying her time off and has not gone back to work yet. She says she is finally getting to do those things that she always said she would do "when she had time," so some craft projects are getting done, photo albums being put together and closets cleaned out. She and Michael have been to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware a couple of times and have two weeks scheduled there over the summer. She had fun visiting Fran in Florida for a week in January despite the chilly temperature and is looking forward to going back to Florida again for Fran's birthday. Over the years, Jehanne has reconnected with friends from grade school, high school and law school in Naples and always enjoys seeing Fran's friends and exercise class buddies. She also has trips to California, Hawaii and Mexico City planned. She recently attended the 75th Annual Brigade Boxing Championships at the United States Naval Academy with Michael, Olivia and one of their former "Sponsor Mids." See picture. And, of course, she looks forward to visiting her daughter, Sandy, and Sandy's dogs, Taco and Rita, in Norfolk, VA as often as she can. In addition to her 25th wedding anniversary, she will be celebrating milestone reunions at both Georgetown and Catholic Universities in 2016. She is also looking forward to the warm weather so she can start running, sailing, biking and playing outside again. She asks that camp friends please keep in touch and email her at  jehanneedwards@gmail.com
