Los Angeles, CA -- The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), the largest California-based immigrant rights organization, reacted to Trump's budget proposal Tuesday.
The following are statements for Angelica Salas, executive director for CHIRLA.
"If a budget is a statement of a president's values and priorities, Trump's proposed spending plan stinks of decay.
The proposed budget is a huge investment on the war machine, indecent reductions on safety net programs including Medicaid, and beefed up immigration enforcement programs, including $1.6 billion to fund Trump's border wall.
Trump's plan is a clear FAIR-inspired request to encourage merit-based admissions for legal immigrants and refugees, and more criminalization and persecution of mixed-status immigrant families. In addition to a startling $30 billion spending hike for national security ($2.6 billion for border security alone), the proposal calls for $1.5 billion to pay for increased detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants. Trump even calls for $40 billion in savings by barring undocumented immigrants from collecting the child care tax credit or the earned-income tax credit.
Trump's draconian blueprint is not only not compassionate by a long shot, it is a cruel joke on the great majority of Americans who will be negatively affected. Congress needs to kill this ill-advised proposal on arrival."
