Your assistance is needed to advocate  for the 30 million children that benefit from school nutrition programs each day.  NOW is the time to step up and get involved with the legislative process. Many of you are not able to attend SNA LAC, but you can still make a difference here at home.

In lieu of a visit, this can be as simple as sending an email or making a quick phone call to your U.S. Representatives. SNA has provided a link that takes you directly to a pre-written email and all you have to do is hit SEND and your Representative will hear from you.  Please click here  to let our voices from Texas be heard! Let us know when and how you take action by Facebook, Twitter, or emailing .

Dear TASN Members,

Darin Crawford
TASN Public Policy and Legislation Chair
On September 12, Representatives McGovern (D) of Massachusetts and Davis (R) of Illinois introduced H.R. 3738, the Healthy Breakfasts Help Kids Learn Act of 2017. This bill would add 6 cents of commodity assistance for each reimbursable breakfast served as part of the National School Breakfast Program. In part this bill was created as a response to advocacy efforts by the School Nutrition Association and the Texas Association of School Nutrition. Each year representatives from all around the country travel to the Legislative Action Conference in Washington, D.C. to advocate for child nutrition. During the last two conferences, the Texas delegation (and everyone else) has been requesting that Congress address the fact that the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act mandated increased breakfast costs without increasing breakfast funding. This bill will finally address this shortcoming  to help our programs operate in the black while simultaneously  supporting the American farm industry.

The bill has currently been referred to the Committee on Education and the Workforce. The best way to help this bill move through the legislative process is to contact your member of the House of Representatives and let them know how you feel about the legislation. If you would like to see this resolution get passed, let them know. Specify the bill by name and tell them about the impact that this will have on your program and your students. In fact, ask them to co-sponsor this bipartisan resolution.  In fact, ask them to co-sponsor this bipartisan resolution.  Make your voices heard!

Thank you,
Darin Crawford
