Crime Trend Alert:  AEP Scams

The latest crime trend in Gahanna involves individuals posing as employees of American Electric Power (AEP) and targeting area businesses.  There have been three incidents where businesses received calls informing them their bill was past due, and if they did not pay immediately, their power would be shut off.  The businesses were then instructed to load funds on to a Green Dot MoneyPak card with a specified amount and to make immediate payment to prevent a disruption in service.  AEP does not demand payment from consumers in this manner.  If customers receive a suspicious call, they are encouraged to hang up and contact the AEP toll-free number listed on their bill.

Unfortunately, utility company scams are too common.  However, there are steps consumers can take to protect themselves from being scammed.

  • Always confirm that you are speaking to a utility representative.  If you have concerns, hang up and contact your utility company to verify the callers identity and confirm information.
  • Be cautious of anyone demanding immediate payment or payments in forms that are difficult to trace such as pre-paid cash cards.
  • Never give out your credit card, social security, personal banking information to anyone that comes to your home, calls or sends you an email requesting such information.
  • Never allow anyone claiming to be a utility service worker into your home, unless you have been shown proper identification or have a scheduled appointment.

If you have information about the latest scam or suspect you have been a victim of this crime, please contact the Gahanna Police Department at 614.342.4240 and contact the Ohio Attorney General's office at 1.800.282.0515.

Gahanna Veterans take Honor Flight to Visit Memorials
in Washington, D.C.
Original Story by Marla K. Kuhlman, ThisWeek Community News

Standing, left to right: Korean War Vets Les Dean, Jack Robb and Donald Mularski. Seated: World War II Hero Paul Blischak

Four Gahanna veterans took a tour of honor in Washington, D.C., on May 17 to visit memorials dedicated to their service.

Thanks to Honor Flight Columbus, World War II veteran Paul Blischak and Korean War veterans Les Dean, Donald Mularski and Jack Robb took an all-expenses-paid, one-day trip to the nation's capital as a token of gratitude and respect for service to their country.

The WWII memorial was dedicated in May 2004, and the Korean War memorial was dedicated in July 1995.

The monuments are tributes to the men and women who died for freedom, according to the Honor Flight Columbus website. Many of the aging veterans have been unable to visit the memorial in a conventional way on their own because of lack of funds or travel obstacles.

Through volunteer guardians who pay their own way, Honor Flight Columbus overcomes many of the problems and escorts them on a trip of a lifetime.

The Gahanna men's guardians for the trip were Ken Bell and Ed Wheeler, of the Gahanna police department. Both are military veterans.

Bell called the men American heroes, adding that Blischak is one of very few WWII heroes still alive.

City Leaders Trying to Keep Facilities Open
Original story by Marla K. Kuhlman, ThisWeek Community News

Gahanna city leaders say they hope to revise programming in an effort to keep the Gahanna Senior Center and Ohio Herb Education Center open.

The facilities are just a small part of a proposed "Sustainable Operating Model" Gahanna City Council is discussing in preparation for the 2015 budget process that begins in June.

Finance director Jennifer Teal said the senior center and herb center were slated for closure, but the new plan calls for operation modifications.

The cost to operate the senior center exceeds its annual revenue by about $98,000 per year, Teal said.

As an alternative to closing the center altogether, she said, the parks-recreation department will match the net cost of senior programming with additional revenue drivers.

The changes could include consolidating senior programming into fewer days and generating additional revenue by renting the facility for community events and providing fee-based adult and youth programs at the facility.

The model includes transfer of part-time support from recreation to the senior center for the additional programs.

Teal said the cost to operate the herb center exceeds revenue by $5,000 to $20,000 annually.

As an alternative to closing the center, Teal said, the parks-recreation department would adjust its programming and retail operations to increase revenue and reduce expenditures.
