Pollinator of the Month:  Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Story and photo submitted by Shannon Barnette, horticulture coordinator, City of Gahanna Parks & Recreation

This month, as part of the City's ongoing Pollinator Community initiative, we are highlighting a native Ohio pollinator whose migration to Mexico occurs in August.

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), is responsible for pollinating many plants including vines, shrubs, and flowers. Hummingbirds typically nest on tree branches or tall shrubs, near steady food sources. In flight, these birds flap their wings 53 times per second. Attracting these colorful birds to your yard can be done by growing plants that have red, orange, or pink blooms. Flowers that are elongated and have a tubular shape are the easiest to feed on for the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Ohio's native species of Bergamot, (Monarda fistulosa), is one of their favorite flowers to visit.
