"Fear or Faith?"

Dear Members & Friends of Our Savior's Lutheran Church,

This coming Sunday we continue our series, "Fearless", as we consider the fear of not having enough. We will consider Luke's parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:13-34) who felt it necessary to tear down his barns only to build bigger ones to store all of his grains and crops in. We will be reminded again of God's promise to provide for all of our needs and we need only live in the moment and offer thanks and praise for this day and all that comes from God with it.

This is a timely reminder for us. To live in the moment and be grateful for all that we have is all the more important for us to consider in the wake of what happened in Las Vegas on Sunday night. Innocent lives of all ages were lost in another senseless act of gun-violence. These lives were people enjoying the moment, at a concert, with family and friends. What happened that night has the potential to inflict fear in our lives, changing perhaps, the way we go about our daily routines and how we choose to live our lives. We can't let this happen. This is yet another reminder why our "Fearless" theme is so important and so relevant to our daily living.

As people of faith, we can live as fearless people of God. Events like what happened in Las Vegas, however, raise doubt in our minds, causing us to choose fear over faith and putting our trust in anything else, but God. I remind you, my friends, faith will always rise triumphant over fear. Christ showed us this on the cross and we are reminded of this promise every time we gather at the graveside of one of our loved ones. Death never has the last say! Paul boldly reminds us of this in his first letter to the Corinthian Church, "Death has been swallowed up in victory! Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? Thanks be to God who gives us victory through our Lord, Jesus Christ!" (15:55).

I realize the sting of death is real and that it is painful on those whose loved ones have gone before us. As people of faith, the promise of new life and resurrection is just as real, and it is equally hopeful for those whose loved ones have gone before us.

Trusting in that hope and promise.

Peace,

Pastor Dale Stiles
