Dear Members & Friends of Our Savior's Lutheran Church,
This coming Sunday is considered Rally Sunday in Lutheran congregations across the nation. It is traditionally the Sunday following Labor Day weekend, after the children and youth have begun school again, that kicks off another educational program year in the church. It is not uncommon for Rally Day to have a theme. Last year at Our Savior's you may remember that theme was "YOur Story", and how combined, Our Story and Your Story combined, tells God's Story in our community. This year we have decided to piggyback on the theme that our children and youth learned about at Wapo Bible camp this Summer, entitled "Fearless."
This coming Rally Sunday we will be introducing this theme that will continue to be learned at five all-family worship services (10:30 service only) throughout the upcoming program year. This Sunday you will hear about how fear is one of the most common topics in the Bible and addressed frequently in Jesus' teachings. You may have heard before that the theme is so common that someone once claimed that the phrase "Do not be afraid" was written in the Bible 365 times - a reminder for each day of our calendar year. Whether or not that is an accurate claim, we can attest that some form of encouragement against fear ("do not be afraid", "fear not", "do not be anxious", "do not worry", etc. ) does occur often throughout our Scriptures.
In preparation for this coming Sunday I encourage you to ask yourself what you are afraid of. It may be spiders, snakes, heights, transition, the future, death, disappointment, etc. The list may be long or short, but nevertheless, fear plays an integral part in all of our lives. Because of the integral part fear can and does play in many of our lives, and because of the impact it can have on how we live for God and our neighbors, we will focus this Sunday on the promises of God and the call for us to trust in God when we experience fear.
Our staff and elected leaders are excited to see you all back into the Fall routine here at church. Make sure to read through this entire eBlast, check out our website, and go to our facebook page to make sure you are as up-to-date as possible with what's happening soon this month and throughout the Fall.
Don't forget our Fall worship schedule begins also this Sunday - 8:00 am and 10:30 am with an hour of Faith Formation in between services at
9:15 am.

Rally Sunday!

This Sunday, September 10, we return to our regular worship service times at 8:00 am and 10:30 pm. There will be family games and a bounce house for children. We're looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Where do you find yourself at OSLC?
* A relative newcomer and trying to find a place that "fits?"
* A professional skilled in your trade but looking for a way to apply those skills serving Christ and the church?
* Recently retired and looking for new volunteer opportunities?
* Or, maybe you've been carrying a big volunteer load at OSLC already, and you need to pull back a bit.
* Wherever you are, we want to meet you there and offer you the best opportunity to serve.
The need is great as OSLC moves to a more formal committee structure of governance. We will have 14 standing committees (Art, Evangelism, Faith Formation and Development, Fellowship, Finance, Health and Caring, Giving Team, Legacy, Mission and Outreach, Personnel, Property and Grounds, Technology, Worship, Women's Ministries) and over 30 slots to fill. We need self-starting leaders willing to carry out the mission of each of these committees (the Board is currently working on the committee charters). Further, there are approximately 30 sub-committees that also serve the needs of the church.  We don't do this for our sake, but for the sake of Christ and His church.
We all have a role to play. Where is God calling you? This Sunday we will be launching our Time and Talent survey. You can fill out an old-fashioned paper survey available during worship service this Sunday and throughout the month of September at the Welcome Desk. Or alternatively, you can take an online survey available starting this Sunday. We also have set up a Sign Up Genius for the 14 committees where we need volunteers.  Please review and consider signing up for a committee.
We are sensitive to busy life schedules and anticipate no more than a monthly meeting schedule will be needed.  This will be the first of several notifications encouraging our members to fill out the survey.  We will review every response and will be in contact with you about your needs and desires.

Can you sew?

We are looking for helpers to sew precut squares together for quilts in disaster relief areas. Squares are cut and ready to be sewn together. Please contact Audrey Reed if you are able to help. You can do this at home or at the church on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 am.
High-Top Tables

We are looking for donations toward the purchase of high-top tables to be placed in the Gathering Area for the purpose of encouraging fellowship among our church family. The cost of each table is $200, and we would like to purchase 8-10 of them. Consider making a donation in honor of or in memory of a loved one. All donations are tax-deductible.
There is a sample table located in the Gathering Area outside the CLC. If you are interested in donating, please complete a donation card located on the table and place it, along with your check donation, either in the offering basket during the church service or in the mail slot at the Welcome Desk. Please indicate "Table Donation" in the memo of your check.
If you have any questions, please contact Shelly Hill.
JuBellate Handbell Choir
Rehearsals for JuBellate will resume at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, September 5. If you would like to be a part of this handbell ministry, please contact Marlene Lentz or just come. We meet in the choir room. If you are new to handbells, lots of help is available! Give it a try!
Be Part of the Kingdom Choir!
The Kingdom Choir at OSLC seeks to lead, teach and inspire the congregation in worship through making music together. We value fellowship in rehearsal and during worship. High school age and older are welcome. We typically sing two Sundays per month as well as for other special occasions. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:00 pm beginning September 6. Come join us! Questions? Please contact Michael Bloem.

Faith Formation Volunteer Installation

This Sunday, September 10, and Wednesday, September 20, we will be installing all our Faith Formation volunteers for the 2017-18 program year. If you are a volunteer, please plan on attending either the 8 or 10:30 am worship service this Sunday or the Wednesday 5:30 pm worship service on September 20. Thank you all for your service!
Children's Choir

This fall we will be bringing back a children's choir to OSLC!  This will give kids (1st-6th grade) who want to sing an opportunity to be active participants in worship, offering the gift of music. The plan is to practice on the all family worship Sundays at 9:15 am when there are no regular faith formation classes (Oct. 8, Nov. 19, Jan. 7, Feb. 11 & Apr. 8).  You may sign kids up through the church website under Children, Youth & Family Ministry.  Questions? Please contact Meredith Caskey.
Jesus and Me Volunteers Needed!

We are looking for a couple of leaders & assistants for "Jesus and Me." Jesus and Me happens during the 10:30 am service on Sundays. Children ages 3 years old through 3rd grade are invited to leave the service during the sermon to play a game or do an activity. Games, activities, and all supplies are provided. Please contact Darla Goble to volunteer.
Faith Formation Supply Donations!

We are in need of a few key supplies. To donate, take a heart off one of
the crosses in the Gathering Area and return it with the donated item by September 10.  Your gracious donations help keep the Faith Formation programs alive and thriving! Questions? Contact Darla Goble or 651-439-5704, ext. 32.
