Five Years After the Earthquake In Haiti:
Our Work Continues

This week marks the 5 year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti.  The 7.0 quake affected an estimated 3 million people, killing as many as 300,000 and leaving countless people homeless and thousands of children orphaned.

IFCO was proud to respond to this tragedy by sending a delegation of Latin American School of Medicine graduates to assist in Haiti to serve side by side with Cuban doctors to provide reinforcement to existing Cuban medical teams. The seven-member delegation spent a month in Haiti working to provide desperately needed medical assistance to over 500 patients a day lined up from early morning to late at night.

IFCO also mobilized members of its network to send an entire container filled with medical aid in order to facilitate the doctor's work.

Quote from Dr. Melissa Barber, a member of the delegation that travelled to Haiti:

"Thinking back to the days of my sitting in that hot auditorium in Cuba for our 'Disaster and Mitigation' course, wondering why and how this class was of any use to me, I am now so grateful to my Cuban medical training and this course and realize that nothing was wasted.   On the ground in Croix de Bouquets,  I was amazed by how this course and the rest of my training in Cuba had completely prepared and equipped me for the task at hand to serve my fellow Haitian brothers and sisters in the midst of the post-earthquake crisis time."

The Challenges in Haiti Continue...

Five years on, countless families are still living in tent consisting of corrugated tin, cardboard and tarps. Leading Haitian activists living in the US to ask where has the millions of dollars raised from relief gone?

Today, IFCO remains committed to supporting our family in Haiti. Part of our work this year will include assisting children orphaned by the earthquake and helping Haitian and Cuban doctors working to provide care in the most neglected corners of the country.

Your generous donation will help make this work happen!!
