This report is an outcome of the October 2014 Symposium which focused on exemplary teaching at the business & society interface. The convening brought together over 100 business school deans, faculty and business practitioners.

Last week, the CEO of Aetna announced the company's plan to boost wages of their lowest paid workers to a minimum of $16/hour. With this increase, Aetna hopes to attract workers with better skills and to enjoy higher retention, but also combat inequality in AmericaJudith Samuelson offers three more solutions that don't require any government intervention, but would have an even greater impact on pay differentials.
Beyster, 1924-2014

Dr. Beyster was an employee ownership pioneer & believed that "people involved in the company should share in its success." He built SAIC, the largest employee-owned research and engineering firm in the U.S.  This also led him to create the Foundation for Enterprise Development, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing entrepreneurship & innovation through broad-based ownership. Dr. Beyster passed away on December 22, 2014, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to shape business for years to come. A collection of teaching resources on employee ownership is available on CasePlace.org.

At the end of last year we recognized faculty who examine how government and business can work together to solve problems and create value. At the vanguard of teaching and scholarship, Aspen Faculty Pioneers tackle this theme head-on in business school classrooms. Rethink the role of executive compensation in reforming the purpose of the corporation

Today, society needs business at the table as a partner and innovator. But this will require executives who think about the long-term consequences of their decisions outside the company's four walls. Judith Samuelson raises three questions; about purpose, how we measure success and how we compensate business managers. These questions will shape discourse and have the potential for real engagement with the business sector.
