A National Treasure

Last week, Murdy Elementary School sixth graders received a visit from Tuskegee airman Lt. Col. Robert J. Friend who shared his experiences and his perspective on service to country, race, and gratitude. At age 97, he is one of 14 remaining Tuskegee airmen, a true national treasure. His visit is part of Murdy's Gratitude Project where students interview a service member or someone who has overcome significant hardship including war, prejudice, poverty, and disabilities, and reflect on their interviews through art and writing.

Student Superhero

Los Amigos High School student Ashley Sotelo was presented with the “Every Student Succeeding” award on behalf of the Association of School Administrators (ACSA) Region 17.

The award honors students who triumph over adversity and inspire others. Ashley has earned a 4.09 grade point average, is an AVID student, and participates in athletics and her community. She will be attending UCLA in the fall. Go Ashley!

Endless Opportunities

Excelsior Elementary School students enjoyed hearing about a variety of career fields at the school's recent Career Day. In this photo, students pass around bones as part of a presentation from a chiropractor.

GGUSD students are encouraged to start thinking about their futures at a young age and dozens of schools throughout the district hold Career Days to bring in real-world professionals to share their career path experiences.

Latinos Unidos Cultural Night

GGUSD Latinos Unidos student leaders from across the district did a fantastic job organizing Cultural Night, which was held March 10. The event features food, music and dancing and embraces the rich cultural diversity of our students and families.

Cinderella, Wash the Floor!

Eisenhower Elementary School students wowed audiences with the school's production of Cinderella. Students participated as part of the Disney Musicals in School and Segerstrom Center for the Arts grant-funded program. GGUSD is committed to maintaining a robust visual and performing arts program.

A Powerful Performance

Los Amigos High School teamed up with the Fountain Valley Police Department for a two-day program called Every Fifteen Minutes that teaches juniors and seniors about the dangers of drinking and driving and encourages responsible decision-making.

Students and police re-enact an alcohol-related collision, make-up artists create realistic injuries for the student actors, police officers and firemen work to save the injured students who are transported to a hospital, and the student playing the drunk driver is handcuffed and arrested.

The powerful program helps students visualize the very real consequences of drinking and driving
