Board Update

Board of Directors approves GSMH operational plan for 2011-2012

Among the actions taken by the Board of Directors when it met June 17 was the approval of the council's 2011-2012 operational plan. The plan is based on the five key priorities identified by the council-wide Strategic Learning team during the recent Strategic Learning process.

In other actions, the Board approved a motion authorizing the proceeds from the sale of council properties (real/tangible/exclusive of inventory) to be used to support future GSMH property maintenance/needs and future property-related capital expenditures.

The Board ratified the Executive Committee's motion not to withdraw from the National Girl Scout Retirement Plan. In addition, Board members approved the appointment of Board members Terri Tomlin (Cape Girardeau) and Heidi Chick (Jefferson City) to the Executive Committee and Board member Nancy Caldwell Ayers (Cape Girardeau) and volunteer Ginger Schneider (Rolla) to the Property Committee.

Valarie Moseley, chief membership/leadership program officer, presented the Board "Mission Moment," which focused on the National Program Portfolio's second component, The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting, which will be available in fall 2011. Along with the Girl Scout Journeys, The Girl's Guide will help girls develop leadership skills and experience the 15 national leadership outcomes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Anne Soots, chief operating officer and Strategic Learning project manager, recapped the Strategic Learning process with an emphasis on the gaps -- the current state and desired future state for each of the five key priorities, plus the obstacles which must be overcome to achieve success.

In her management report, CEO Jennifer Orban noted the council had 14,380 girl members to date (with a goal of 18,000) and 4,590 adult members (with a goal of 5,000). At the time of the Board meeting, 761 girls were registered for camp. Board chair Tina Stillwell discussed the council chartering process, the three proposals on the ballot for the National Council Session in Houston, Texas in November, and the search for the new national CEO to succeed Kathy Cloninger.

The next Board meeting will take place Sept. 16 at the Rickman Center in Jefferson City, Mo. The meeting will be preceded by orientation for new board members and followed by a retreat for all board members.

Property Update

Joplin Service Center to Move to New Location

The recent tornado in Joplin left many businesses without operating space, many of which were looking to reopen as quickly as possible. As many of you are aware, our Joplin Service Center had been on the market since spring 2010, after the board of directors voted last year to sell it and move operations to a satellite facility. A sales contract for the service center was submitted on Friday, May 27, and the board of directors approved it on Wednesday, June 1. The property closing date was Monday, June 27.

We recognize that the recent tornado disaster has disrupted many lives, and we have been working hard to make this transition process as seamless as possible for the girls, volunteers and staff in Joplin. The board approved a lease for space one mile from the current service center location, in the Crown Plaza at 1202 S. Rangeline Road, Suites 8 & 9. This space will accommodate staffing needs, house retail operations and a seasonal cookie cupboard, and provide a location for members to drop off paperwork. There will be a transition time to remodel the new facility, so the facility will not be open to the public until later this fall. Please help us let the membership know that if they need to contact staff members who work out of the Joplin area facility to continue calling the same number and extension as they will be checking voicemail daily and returning calls. We will keep you updated on the progress of the opening date.
