St. Patrick's Day: Increased Sales Not
Just the Luck of the Irish?

It is the end of winter and there only two things on people's minds: the warm weather to come - and St. Patrick's Day.  The two seem to be intertwined as people will take spring vacations and extended weekend trips just to celebrate the holiday on the brink of spring.  It's a time to celebrate heritage and history.  Originally becoming popular from historical events such as the hunger strike and the tensions between the IRA and Great Britain, celebrating Irish heritage began to draw intense media coverage.  Today, the holiday has become more than just celebrating Irish heritage.  It has evolved into a sort of celebration of life for all people and all religions.  As the popular saying goes, "On St. Patty's Day, Everyone is Irish."

Writing and Editing Tips for Entrepreneurs

Success in business is determined by many factors: product, price, customer service, location or accessibility, and more. Every time you present yourself, you are being compared to your competition, a comparison that can make or break your business. Consumers are very quick to judge you by your writing.

Letters, website copy, brochures, and signs give your consumers an impression of you and your professionalism. Incorrect spelling, grammar, and punctuation make a poor impression, suggesting that you either don't know or don't care how to write correctly. But writing without errors is difficult.

As a professional writer and editor, I have learned a few tricks over the years to ensure that my work is as polished as possible.

When Is the Right Time to Grow a Business?

In early 2012, just a year after Michelle King started her business, she had more work than she could handle on her own. Reputation Capital, her Jacksonville, Fla.-based B2B public relations and communications firm, was continually growing through King's relationships and referrals from happy clients and required more and more of her time. She was working long weekdays and every weekend, and because she had worked as a consultant for years, managing teams of PR consultants and their workflow for other agencies, King knew that the billings and hours were too much for just one person.

While she enjoyed the flexibility of working from home without managing employees, she realized that she had reached the point where her only choices were to turn down new work or hire someone and grow the company.

It's a dilemma faced by many solo entrepreneurs at some point - to keep the business small and easily manageable or to expand the business and hire employees for greater growth.

The Edge Kitchen Recipe of the Month
Happy St. Patricks

No one dish defines St. Patrick's Day quite like corned beef and cabbage.

However, controversy surrounds the dish's St. Patty's origins.

While the Irish certainly cooked corned beef, it was actually bacon (more like ham) and cabbage that was a yearly tradition. However, the move to America may have changed that for many Irish-Americans.

The result was the adoption of corned beef, a dish they were already familiar with. Once pig was stigmatized, Irish immigrants found it easy to adopt the now traditional dish.

Corned beef is called corned beef because of its salted nature. The term comes from the addition of "corns" of salt added to the beef while it's slow cooked.

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Ingredients
  • 5 pounds corned brisket of beef
  • 6 peppercorns, or packaged pickling spices
  • 3 carrots, peeled and quartered
  • 3 onions, peeled and quartered
  • 1 medium-sized green cabbage, quartered or cut in wedges
  • Melted butter (about 4 tablespoons)
