GOING BEYOND THE FIVE POINTS

Pursuing a More Comprehensive Reformation

Rob Ventura, General Editor

In recent years, a doctrinal shift has taken place among believers so great that even the secular press has taken notice. Christians across denominational lines are laying hold of the biblical truth of God's electing love and saving grace in Christ, commonly called 'Calvinism.' For many, this marks the beginning of a deeper study into the whole counsel of God in Scripture. A thirst to be thoroughly biblical in all areas of life is driving a more comprehensive present-day reformation beyond the famous 'five points.' This book captures the voices of seasoned Reformed pastors graciously guiding and encouraging Christ's beloved sheep to press on and to seek the 'old paths, where the good way is' (Jer. 6:16). In this anthology you will be instructed concerning the abiding relevance of the Ten Commandments, God-centered worship, the masterful unfolding of God's great plan of redemption through divine covenants, the identity, nature, and work of the church, and the help that confessions of faith lend to our grasp of God's glorious Word.

ENDORSEMENTS

"The rediscovery of 'the doctrines of grace' among Baptists during the last sixty years has thrilled my heart! However, this welcome advance does not make a reformation. The further necessary questions of 'what is the church?' 'how should we worship God?' 'what is Christ like living?' stand before us still, begging for biblical reformation. 'Going Beyond the Five Points' provides clear biblical direction for reforming churches today. Barcellos' defense of the Ten Commandments for Christian living under grace is unassailable. Blackburn's chapters on Covenant Theology and the doctrine of the church are indispensable to Baptist reformation. Waldron's explanation of the Regulative Principle is greatly needed by Baptists to remind us of our foundational principle which needs renewed application to worship and government. Martin's persuasive defense of why Baptists need confessions of faith today is irrefutable. To gather them together as Ventura has done provides a classic standard for further Baptist reformation today. Baptist pastors, students, and church members need to study this book to understand what it means to build biblical and Reformed Baptist churches today for the glory of Christ." - Dr. Fred A. Malone, Senior Pastor First Baptist Church Clinton, Louisiana

"Going Beyond the Five Points is a wonderful pastoral resource to give to any brother or sister in Christ who has begun the journey of better understanding the doctrines of grace. If the Five Points are the appetizer for the hungry believer, these essays will provide a rich and satisfying main course to guide them in a deeper understanding of the truth." - Jim Savastio, Pastor of Reformed Baptist Church of Louisville, Kentucky

OUR COVENANTAL HERITAGE: Essays in Baptist Covenant Theology edited by Rich Barcellos
If you are interested in covenant theology, this book is for you. It in no way pretends to be a fully worked-out Baptist covenant theology. It contains essays by thirteen different authors who do not necessarily advocate the fine details of every contribution, something that is quite common with multiple-author works.   After the Preface and Introduction, the first main section is historical. It seeks to set a historical-theological context for the reader. The second section discusses various biblical issues related to covenant theology. The third section of the book, though the shortest, seeks to put things together, though certainly not in any comprehensive sense.

"Recovering a Covenantal Heritage is more than a book title; it is a welcomed clarion call for modern Reformed Baptists. May it receive a wide and thorough reading, and spark a renewal of distinct Reformed Baptist theology!" - Voddie Baucham, Pastor of Preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church; Author of 'Joseph and the Gospel of Many Colors'

                                  LIST PRICE $34.00  -  OUR PRICE $21.75

GOD WITHOUT PASSIONS: A Reader edited by Samuel Renihan
Subtitled A Reader, the primary purpose of the material presented in this book is to familiarize the reader with sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English language sources pertinent to the doctrine of divine impassibility, particularly for those who confess with the Reformed confessions that God is 'without body, parts, or passions.' If this material is studied carefully, the reader will encounter an excellent and diverse array of writings that touch on this subject.

"Samuel Renihan has brought together a first-rate collection of mainly Reformed and Particular Baptist thinking on the doctrine of God, particularly his impassibility, which goes back to the church Fathers. This aspect of God's nature is much misunderstood and caricatured at present, such a God being thought to be withdrawn, apathetic, even psychotic. But these extracts show that the reverse is the case. Impassibility indicates the fullness of God's care for his creation. For he is not subject to fits, or spasms, or moods, or passions." - Paul Helm, Emeritus Professor, University of London

We Now Have 6 Titles from this Gifted Preacher

Earl Blackburn has served the Lord in the Church since December 27th, 1976. He has served seven years in Utah, twenty-two years in California, and now nearly ten years in Louisiana. Over the past several years brother Earl has battled with cancer which has caused him to appreciate the church more than ever. All his books are written by a man who has a burning passion for the Church of Christ, and who desires to stir up the hearts of people all over the world to love the Church Christ loved enough to lay down his life for her. We are honored to offer the following titles by our brother and friend, with the hope that we will see more in the years to come by our dear brother.

JESUS LOVES THE CHURCH AND SO SHOULD YOU

COVENANT THEOLOGY: A Baptist Distinctive

DENOMINATIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS

THE LIFE OF JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

UNCONDITIONAL ELECTION

THE MEANS OF GRACE

"I have known Earl for 35 years, during which time we have struggled together making decisions, studied hard to advance our scholarship in the gospel, endured the inevitable problems arising from pastoral ministry, and depended upon one another for honest counsel; agreeing with him most of the time and finding it to have been profitable when we did not. He is a serious student, excels in his grasp of technical and controversial matters, and is gifted and tireless in his efforts to pass this on to faithful men. It is my privilege to be known as one of the 'Rowdy Friends' he mentions in his Preface. His love for Christ's church is known far beyond my slender recommendation. I can commend without reserve this his latest work on a subject dear to his heart." - Pastor Tom Lyon, University Place, WA

"Having known and worked with Pastor Earl Blackburn for many years, I have repeatedly seen his love for Christ and local congregations. His insight and cogent thinking regarding practical ecclesiology have been a repeated help to me as a pastor of two Reformed Baptist churches. Many believers have been helped by his instruction concerning these things in the material he has previously written. I'm very pleased to see his booklets brought together in one work, expanded and improved by the serious study and mature reflection of our dear brother. I believe this book will be of invaluable help to the dear people of Christ's Church who read it and follow the godly wisdom expressed in it." - Pastor Larry Vincent, Mansfield, TX

How Presbyterians & Congregationalists Wrestled Over Church Government

This work contains a lesser known set of documents produced by the Westminster Assembly of Divines, arguing for and against the Presbyterian form of church government. Discontented with the majority's Presbyterian views, the Congregationalist members produced dissenting papers to which the Assembly replied, giving a more detailed view of the matters debated than the snatches of information recorded in the Assembly's Minutes.

"The Grand Debate displays the concerns of Congregationalists and Presbyterians as they were debated during the Westminster Assembly. The 21st century reader will not only learn history here, but ecclesiology that touches matters of the soul. This book will force the patient and discerning reader to examine his own heart and his love for the brethren; even those with whom he may disagree. We are called to unity in the Holy Scriptures and this volume, though polemical in degree, stands in that apostolic tradition."  -C. N. Willborn, Adjunct Professor of Historical Theology, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

A THEOLOGY OF THE FAMILY
Five Centuries of Biblical Wisdom for Family Life
Edited by Scott Brown & Jeff Pollard

John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards, John Gill, William Gouge, Matthew Henry, Martin Luther, A.W. Pink, J. C. Ryle, R. C. Sproul, Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Watson join to give a powerful testimony that the 21st-century church needs to be reminded of what she used to believe about family life. These authors bring a measure of the correction and the balm necessary to heal our amnesia and return us to biblical order.

"This volume is a spiritual buffet for Christian family life, a delicious smorgasbord of short selections largely drawn from treasured Reformed writers. It dishes up biblical truth, loading the table with meaty explanation, sweet comfort, and well-spiced exhortation for fathers, mothers, children, and young people." - Dr. Joel R. "There are many books on the family, so why another one? This is not 'another one'! I commend 'A Theology of the Family' because it is a compilation of some of the best articles on the subject of the family from proven teachers of the last five hundred years." - Conrad Mbewe, pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church, in Lusaka Zambia, and author of Foundations for the Flock: Truths About the Church for All the Saints

SERMONS ON THE LORD'S SUPPER by Jonathan Edwards

There are 15 sermons in this 272 page book, only two of which have been published before, and those in the expensive editions published by Yale University Press. They are not available anywhere else.  Nine of the sermons deal with the Lord's Supper; the other 6 are on a variety of topics.  LIST PRICE $30.00  -  SALE PRICE $10.00

THE CHRISTIAN ON THE MOUNT: A Treatise on Meditation by Thomas Watson

This scarce work by the beloved Puritan Thomas Watson has been out of print since the early 19th century. It calls us to love God with our minds by thinking on things of eternal significance. "The Puritans were thoroughly Reformed, consistent, and persistent in using 'the art of meditation' as an important spiritual discipline and half-way house between the reading of Scripture and prayer. More than forty Puritans wrote books on the subject. Today we have reaped the fruits of not understanding that a non-meditative, mindless Christianity soon produces a spineless Christianity. Thomas Watson's guide for meditation is one of the best and briefest on the subject. If you wish to transform your spiritual disciplines for the better, read, re-read, and then put into practice this precious little book." --Dr. Joel R. Beeke

LIST PRICE $15.00 - SALE PRICE $8.50

THE PRECIOUS THINGS OF GOD by Octavius Winslow

The author elucidates such 'precious' things as Christ, faith, trials, God's thoughts, divine promises, the blood of Christ, the anointing of the Holy Spirit, God's children, God's Word, prayer, Christ's sympathy with our infirmities, and the death of the saints.  This is a wonderful devotional manual on experiential Christianity. This book is the first modern edition of this title. It has been retypeset and slightly modernized. The last edition published prior to this was a lithograph of a 19th century copy. This is a completely new edition.  Highly recommended by MacArthur, Beeke and many others!!

LIST PRICE $24.00  -  SALE PRICE $10.00

SIGHS FROM HELL The Groans of a Damned Soul  by John Bunyan

This book is especially timely in light of Rob Bell's recent book release called "Love Wins," in which he denies a literal hell, other than the one we make for ourselves. But over 300 years ago John Bunyan wrote this little work in which he exposits the story in Luke 16 of Dives and Lazarus, and shows biblically that hell is quite literal---at least Jesus thought so! This book has been slightly updated as to language and grammar. It is hardbound and printed on acid-free paper. While this work of Bunyan's is not as well known as "Pilgrim's Progress," it is very important, particularly for evangelism. This is what sinners need to be saved from!   LIST PRICE $20.00  -  SALE PRICE $10.00

SOME RHB TITLES WE ARE NOW CARRYING!

We are always seeking to add titles from other trusted publishers that will minister to those of all ages and stages in life.  The books seen above and described below fit the category perfectly.

NIGHT OF WEEPING & MORNING OF JOY by Horatius Bonar

The Night of Weeping expounds compassionately and beautifully a biblical view of suffering, showing how it is an integral part of belonging to God's family, how to cope with it, and how it benefits the believer. The chapters on the purifying and solemnizing fruits of suffering are themselves worth the price of the book. The Morning of Joy shows how God leads believers to rejoice in the present and future joys of the living church, particularly through fellowshipping with the resurrected Christ. The chapters on the majestic kingdom of Christ and the superlative joys of glory are most uplifting.

GOD'S ALPHABET FOR LIFE devotions for young children by Beeke & Boorsma

Using the alphabet as a guide, this book provides 26 devotional meditations for young children (ages 4-9), based on Bible texts that children can easily memorize. God's Alphabet for Life stresses that, like adults, children must be born again, come by faith and repentance to the Lord Jesus Christ, and live lives of thankfulness to God for His great salvation.

"Here is a great resource for parents wondering where to start with training their children. I highly recommend God's Alphabet for Life as an excellent tool for communicating truth your children will grow into and never outgrow." - Tedd Tripp

THE FEET OF JESUS by P.B. Power

"The Feet of Jesus is a virtual manual of spiritual growth; it pulsates with Christ-glorifying insight, spiritual comfort, and practical guidance. Power's book unveils as do few others the inestimable value of Jesus and His work both in His humiliation and exaltation. If you would grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ Jesus, pray for Mary's portion to sit at the feet of Jesus as you read this book." - Joel R. Beeke

THOUGHTS FOR YOUNG MEN
by J.C. Ryle
Preface by Sinclair Ferguson

Of the more than 350 books I have published in the last twenty-four years none have received the number of glowing endorsements like Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle.  WHAT A BOOK!!

"RYLE IS MAGNIFICENT! There's no other word for it, - are you brave enough to face hard-hitting truth and have God search your heart on things that matter most? Then Ryle is the man for you! Do yourself a favor - read this and think about what you read." - J.I. Packer

"I heartily endore it, and strongly commend it to both Christian leaders and fathers, not to mention older and younger men alike." - John MacArthur, Jr.

"Thoughts for Young Men is pure spiritual gold." - Jerry Bridges

"Thoughts for Young Men abounds in reliable counsel and says - with a rare combination of seriousness and graciousness - the very things we need to hear. Young men, for whom it was written, will find it invaluable; but all Christians, men or women, young or old, can read it with lasting benefit. It deserves to be widely read and circulated, and will do spiritual good to every reader." - Sinclair Ferguson

"Thoughts for Young Men is wise, frank, warm-hearted and hard-hitting. I hope that many, many young men will study it, and that parents and teachers will also read it in order to clarify their vision of what Christian young men should be. Although written over a century ago, the message is right up-to-date." - John R.W. Stott

"Out of Ryle's dealings with many young people came one of the most important and relevant things he ever wrote, his Thoughts for Young Men. The reading of this material could well be a turning point in the lives of many today across the world." - Iain Murray

"I am happy to commend the re-publication of Thoughts for Young Men." - Leon Morris

"Thoughts is sound, profitable reading. I commend it to young men everywhere." - James M. Boice

A Wounded Army Vet Joins with Bo, the Three-Legged Dog,
to Teach Children Invaluable Lessons
by Sharman Martin

Follow the adventures of Bo, a real-life, three-legged dog who lost his right leg in a terrible accident, but who persevered and won the heart of his new owner and the author of the book. Although this is written for young children, parents and teachers will find this story tugging at their hearts, as they see the value and integrity of all creatures of our God and King.

In this second book Bo meets a real-life hero from the Iraq War, Noah Galloway who lost an arm and leg while serving his country. Noah has persevered to become a national hero to thousands who have heard him speak about overcoming disabilities. One purpose of the book is to share how one can overcome trials that are sent as a test from the Lord.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Noah Galloway was selected to appear on the cover of the Men's Health Magazine this past November. The announcement was made on the Today Morning Show on national television, as he was selected from nearly 1300 worthy entries to the contest. We clearly see the hand of God in his selection. Pray for Noah as doors are flying open all over the country, and as he begins to speak about this upcoming book. Pray for him as he will be facing new challenges even more dangerous than what he faced in Iraq.

THE GREAT MYSTERY OF THE COVENANT OF GRACE by Samuel Petto
The original was published in the 1670s and has a foreword by John Owen. Samuel Petto (c 1624-1711) was a dissenting minister in Sudbury, Suffolk. The list of 29 Scottish ministers recommending the book include M'Crie of Edinburgh and Kidd of Aberdeen. THIS IS THE FIRST EDITION PRINTED SINCE 1820!
John Owen said the following about this volume: "This work by this worthy author is a sober endeavor for the declaration and true stating of the nature and difference of the two covenants of works and grace."

CHRIST & HIS CHURCH IN THE PSALMS  by Andrew Bonar
"Of the highest order of merit. The author does not strain the text, but gives its real meaning. His remarks are always weighty, spiritual, and suggestive; we only wish there were more of them. He has cultivated brevity." - CH Spurgeon

THE GOSPEL REVEALED TO JOB by Charles Hulbert

Comprises thirty lectures with notes. Spurgeon gives his top rating and says: "An unusually good book; exceedingly comprehensive and helpful in many ways. The author aimed at usefulness and has succeeded wonderfully. We wonder that his work has not been better known."

In spite of the relentless attacks against this book, we are thankful to be able to announce that HOLDING COMMUNION TOGETHER has been received by brethren all over the world who have expressed their deep gratitude to the publisher and the authors.

Thanks to tips from friends and foes alike we have located and corrected numerous annoying typographical errors that made it into the first printing. A few factual corrections have also been made as they were pointed out to the authors.

Steve Martin concludes his Book Review with these words: "God's own Word shows the truth of God's servants, warts and all. I believe He will honor this honest "warts and all" telling of the first half-century of the confessional Reformed Baptist. There is much promise to our movement as we learn from our many painful memories. But there is more of Christ's glory to see and savor too! May our next 50 years show forth more of Christ's glory with more holy ministers and more healthy churches. We shall have to be honest with ourselves and repent of our many mistakes. Thank you Pastors Chantry and Dykstra for helping our movement to face the past and in doing so, doing the hard thing well!"

The closing words of the book are from the heart of Dr. Jim Renihan, as he closed his paper which was delivered in March 1998 at a minister's fraternal in Grand Rapids, MI on the subject of Reformed Baptist Associations - "I do not expect to be able to convince everyone present of the propriety of joining a formal association. In fact, that has not been my purpose in this paper. But I do hope that I have demonstrated that those of us who believe that this is the right course to follow are not merely pragmatically abandoning our commitment to Scripture. We have tried to be true to the patterns and forms of Scripture, and find much evidence that our course of action is consonant with New Testament ecclesiology. I would appeal to you brethren, if you disagree with us, to be careful in the way you describe us. We may disagree over the nature of the warrant for associations, but that does not make us any less committed to a robust Scriptural doctrine of the church.

In any case, the glory of God is our greatest concern. Let us pray for one another. We may disagree over the implementation of these particular principles. But we serve the same Savior, and have the same motivations at heart. May Jesus Christ be glorified in our lives, as we serve Him in our generation. Amen."

Nearly every day Islam is in the news.  Sadly, many Christians have no clue how they can reach a Muslim with the Gospel.  We are now offering for the first time a powerful Trilogy to remedy that situation.  Thabiti Anyabwile, James White and Karim Shamsi-Basha could not be more different, but they each speak of the grace of God as the key to reaching the lost who are trapped in the error of Islam.  Each book is reduced but a greater discount awaits those who order all three.
