Neuroscience and Music: From research to relationship. The connection between brain research and therapeutic practice

This institute will explore the current state of socio-emotional neuromusicology and music therapy in lecture, discussion, and experiential formats, with particular emphasis on musical creativity and clinical improvisation.

This institute will improve attendees' abilities to facilitate group improvisation by providing relevant terminology, structures, and techniques through lecture, experience, and discussion.

Music Therapy Drumming: Level one intensive

This course focuses primarily on specific music skills, while also surveying the four methods commonly used in music therapy (re-creative, improvisational, compositional, receptive) through the Taxonomy of Drumming Experiences.  Participants engage in an informal self pre-test/post-test on their own skills.

Today's Clinical, Ethical, and Business Practices of Hospice Music Therapy

Russell Hilliard, PhD, LCSW, LCAT, MT-BC, CHRC   

Current trends in practice for end of life care will be discussed and reviewed with a focus on counseling skills, prolonged grief disorder, and procedural support music therapy. Participants will earn a CMTE for ethics focusing on boundaries in hospice care. Medicare cuts and increased scrutiny threaten music therapy jobs, and strategies to protect these positions will be offered.

Klezmer, Middle Eastern and Latin Music: Ethical Considerations and Clinical Applications

Klezmer, Middle Eastern and Latin Music song repertoire, modes, and improvisation structures will be explored for applications in music therapy sessions, therapeutic goals which may be targeted,
stylistically authentic accompaniment styles and rhythm patterns, and ethical issues related to the meaning and use of the music in authentic culture.      

 

Mandalas and Music: Listening to the Colors  

Susan Cotter-Schaufele
Mandalas and music will be presented as a non-verbal creative art
experience with reflective discussion. Color theories, supportive verbal analysis, music choices and client mandala examples will be introduced. Participants will draw one mandala to recorded and one mandala to live music and share reflections with other participants.

Playing With Style: Creating authentic guitar accompaniment
Pete Meyer

Do you accompany yourself on the guitar in a similar way every time you play? Do you want to play in different styles? This workshop will provide you with the skills to accompany yourself on guitar in a variety of styles including Blues, Jazz, Rock and World Music.

Embracing Life through Music: Connecting Birth and Hospice Care through an Examination of Music Therapy Applications

This presentation will explore music therapy in childbirth and end of life care by demonstrating how music can serve populations during these life transitions.  The role of music therapy in addressing biological, psychological and social needs during the birthing and dying process will be compared and connections will be drawn.  

I Took the NMT Training...Now What?: A Guide to Effective Implementation (Prerequisite: NMT Training)

The NMT training institute is an intense training experience that leaves newly certified individuals eager to implement new skills into clinical practice. However, implementation of NMT techniques comes with its own set of challenges. This CMTE will provide participants with the chance to re-familiarize themselves with current research, and treatment protocols, as well as seek clarification of specific techniques.

Professional and Ethical Boundaries in Music Therapy

AMTA's Code of Ethics will be reviewed. Participants will have
the opportunity to explore how boundaries in personal life differ from boundaries in professional life. Discussions will be encouraged around questions like: How are professional boundaries established? How and when is social media appropriate to promote my profession or business?

An Introduction to the Bonnie Method of GIM
Louise Dimicelli-Mitran
The Bonny Method of GIM involves listening to selected classical music in a relaxed state to elicit mental imagery, while Music Imagery is a more contained adaptation. Group experientials will be included. The therapeutic functions of music, imagery and processing will be discussed; definitions, clinical uses, contraindications and resources will be given.

Eating Disorders and Substance Abuse: A Wellness Based Music Therapy Treatment Model
Kathleen Murphy and Annie Heiderscheit
This CMTE will provide a music-centered model based on humanistic theories, and the 12-steps of AA for working with individuals who have co-occurring substance-related and eating disorders. Case studies & experiential exercises will be used to demonstrate ways in which music used alone or in combination with art and movement are used to meet treatment goals.

Music in the Moment: An introduction to Clinical Improvisation
Lindsay Markworth and Lindsay Rossmiller
Through active music-making, and participant experiences within a variety of moods, styles, and idioms, foundational parallels will be made between techniques for clinical improvisation and the corresponding application of a relationship-based model within ones current practice. Music-Centered assessment, goal
development, documentation and skills for communicating with other professionals will also be targeted.

The Scientific Clinician: Designing and Implementing Single System and Pilot Research
Kamile Geist
The purpose of this CMTE course will be to provide music therapy clinicians with the tools they need to conduct single system or pilot studies. Participants will learn what questions to ask and how to systematically answer those questions while adding to the growing evidence in music therapy.

Refueling the Brain: Applying Neuroplasticity Principles to Clinical Music Therapy Practice

 

Dr. Elizabeth Stegem�ller completed her undergraduate work in Biology and Music Therapy at UMKC and her PhD in Neuroscience at Northwestern University. She then went on to complete a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Applied Neuromechanics at the University of Florida. Dr. Stegem�ller has recently joined the Department of Kinesiology at Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor. Here, she will pursue her interests in facilitating movement through music in populations with movement disorders and will use neuroimaging technology to examine associated brain activity.

Saturday, get ready to TAKE-OFF and make things happen as we listen to the Western Illinois University String Quartet at our annual awards luncheon.  And back by popular demand is an evening of live karaoke with music therapists Pete Meyer and Friends.  You'll certainly remember the fun they provided last year in Columbus.
 
We will SOAR to new heights on Sunday with the CD release party produced by Carolyn Koebel focusing on music from the world of hospice music therapy.  We are sure to be inspired as we celebrate music therapy and return home to work with renewed energy.    
Cancellation and Refund Policy

Refunds for cancellations are available by written request only. Requests must be mailed to conference chair, Melaine Pohlman, 1839 Sheffield Lane, Geneva, IL 60134. Full refunds cannot be made. 70% of fees will be refunded if the request is postmarked no later than February 21, 2014. 50% of fees will be refunded if request is postmarked before February 28, 2014.   No refunds will be made after February 28, 2014. Refunds will be processed within 45 days after the conference.



Passages

Passages is a free "mini-conference" put on 'by the students, for the students.  GLR AMTAS will host Passages 2014, on Thursday, March 27th. Passages 2014 will feature student presentations on research and clinical experience, an internship panel, and a keynote presentation.

Call for Proposals is Open: We are looking for student presenters who are interested in sharing skills, research, and clinical experience to their peers.  We encourage presentations that target the needs of the student body, especially hands-on or workshop-type interventions.  Presentations should be an hour in length.  Submissions should contain an abstract, available slides (if applicable), A/V and instrument needs, and full contact information. Passages 2014 is a great opportunity to share information with your fellow students, network with new professionals and is an excellent item for resumes and internship applications.

High School students interested in learning more about music therapy are invited to attend the conference on Saturday, March 29, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Participating students will receive an introduction to the field of music therapy followed by an opportunity to attend 2 concurrent sessions of their choice as well as explore our vibrant exhibit hall.
