Shining a Light!BGE

Did you know that, at 200 years old, BGE is the oldest gas company in our nation? On June 24th, Art with a Heart was delighted to attend the "Shining a Light on You" event at the Hippodrome Theatre. The celebration was in appreciation of BGE's community partners, including Art with a Heart.

Art with a Heart's Director of Public Art and Community Service, Jenny Hyle, had the opportunity to speak to guests about the organization's mission and the current collaboration with BGE to complete and install 100 mosaics in schools throughout central Maryland.

Art with a Heart Welcomes New Board MembersNewBoard

It is with gratitude that Art with a Heart welcomes nine new members to its Board of Directors. We look forward to working with Julie Bernstein, Marjorie Herbert, Dino Karanikas, Pam Loeb, Patrick Martyn, Alyssa Sapia, Stephanie Sher, Craig Solomon, and Vicki Tepper. Thank you all for your willingness to serve and share your knowledge and experiences to further the organization's mission. 
PROGRAMMING
Mountain Manor Students Become PicassoPicasso

Students in Art with a Heart classes at Mountain Manor Treatment Center learned about artist   Pablo Picasso and created self-portraits in the artist's style. Students used vibrant oil pastels on corrugated paper to accentuate their colorful personalities!
 
Big Smiles at Baltimore Junior Academy BigSmiles
 
Art with a Heart started a summer program at Baltimore Junior Academy and was greeted with big smiles. Students created imaginative portraits using mixed media materials including model magic, yarn, markers, foam and more.
KIPP Kids and Kente Cloth CreationsKenteatKIPP

Seventh graders in Art with a Heart classes at   KIPP Ujima Village Academy created bright and colorful  Kente cloth weavings. The students had a great time experimenting with color, pattern, texture and line, and were very proud of their final pieces. 
Wonderful Worlds at WaverlyWaverly

Using a variety of materials such as cardboard boxes, paint, clay and magazines, students in Art with a Heart classes at Waverly Elementary/Middle School created imaginative "worlds." Students in grades 2 through 8, worked collaboratively to create fantasy lands, prehistoric terrains and cityscapes.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Johns Hopkins Legal Department Community MosaicsJHH

Work continued on the Johns Hopkins community mosaics. Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation (JHHS)  and Johns Hopkins Medicine Legal Department  staff along with Art with a Heart students and volunteers worked through June on the project. The mosaics will be installed in JHHS Legal's new building in August. 
Playing with Mosaics for a PlaygroundPlayground

Art with a Heart designed, coordinated and facilitated the completion of two 5'x3' mosaic murals for a playground at Krieger Schechter Day School. Art with a Heart engaged over 200 enthusiastic community members and students in the creation of the mosaics which now adorn the new community play space.

On June 7th, Art with a Heart partnered with Business Volunteers Maryland to host the Annie E. Casey Foundation for a Day of Service. We are grateful for the Foundation's continued service and partnership.

In June, Art of Leadership students once again stepped out of their comfort zone. Kate Weinberg, an Art of Leadership Advisory Board Member and educator, led a session on storytelling and public speaking. After a period of reflection, each student practiced their public speaking skills by sharing their story.

Summer Job Program SummerJobs

On June 27th, Art with a Heart's 11th Summer Job Program began with participants from Youth Empowered Society , TurnAround, Inc. , the Woodbourne Heights community at  Faith Presbyterian Church , YouthWorks , Thread , and the Bridges Mentoring Program . We are eager to watch the students grow and learn, set career goals, and build relationships for the next five weeks.
