Transforming Communities, the IMLS Strategic Plan 2018-2022, [
PDF, 4.59 MB] frames how IMLS will advance, support, and empower America's libraries, museums, and the communities they serve.
"Museums and libraries provide Americans with access to vital collections, information, and opportunities that can be life-changing," said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. "We hope this strategic vision will open up new conversations, inspire meaningful collaboration, and help museums and libraries improve the well-being of their communities."
The new plan outlines four strategic goals that will underpin the agency's programs and services:
1. P
romote Lifelong Learning: IMLS supports learning and literacy for people of all ages through museums and libraries.
2. Build Capacity: IMLS strengthens the capacity of museums and libraries to improve the well-being of their communities.
3. Increase Public Access: IMLS makes strategic investments that increase access to information, ideas, and networks through libraries and museums.
4.
Achieve Excellence:
IMLS strategically aligns its resources and relationships to support libraries and museums nationwide.
Developed with input from a wide variety of community stakeholders, as well as IMLS leadership, staff, and board members, the agency invites a continuation of the conversation through three Twitter chats: January 17, 24, and 31, focusing on learning, capacity building, and access. Please see the
IMLS website for more details.
IMLS will assess the agency's progress in achieving the goals and objectives framed in the strategic plan, revising it accordingly over the next five years.
