Hi everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas/New Years/holiday season and that your New Year is off to a great start! Our holidays went great, but right at the end, flu hit our area in a big way. It seemed like everyone had it, including most of our family. After it passed around the family twice, I'm finally starting to get some energy back and can again focus on details of management and game design. So, everything work-related is just a bit behind where I was hoping it would be, but we should be back on track soon.

We have a ton of information to share this time, and a boatload of designer updates below as well, so let's get right to the news.

------------
Space Empires Replicators Shipping Late this Week! Slight Delay on At Any Cost. We will begin shipping P500 orders of Space Empires: Replicators either Thursday or Friday this week. We're still awaiting a few components for At Any Cost. Looks like about 2-3 more weeks until we'll have it ready to ship. We'll charge for it on January 30, which should give us a very short charge-to-ship window.

------------
Status of Wing Leader: Blitz map re-shipments
. We have now finished shipping out all the missing map from Wing Leader: Blitz, so all of you P500 orderers should have them shortly. We've also updated warehouse copies of the game, so everything going out to stores and distributors will have the map included. Again, we're very sorry for the inconvenience on this one.

------------
New P500 Additions.  We have three new P500 additions this time.

First, we have the first game in the new Bayonet & Muskets series from Ben Hull and David Fox: Banish All Their Fears. This series will cover battles from the War of the League of Augsburg, 1688-1697, and the War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-1714. Big battles, great generals, and yes... Marlborough!

Next up we have Lee's newest expansion for his popular Wing Leader series, Wing Leader: Eagles.

Finally, Mitch has created another cool supplement for you Next War series players. This one is Next War Supplement #2, is focused on Insurgency, and has lots of interesting goodies included.

 ------------
On the Horizon. I know of at least a dozen of our Twitter followers who just read the new P500s for this month and now want to tar and feather me because "Hey! There's no new 18xx game on the list!." So, I admit I thought we'd have one this month, but when I asked Tony and Mark about it in preparation for this month's additions, Tony noted that the deal is done, but that Mark and the designer are taking their time to make sure we have exactly the type of components that suit the game best and that our 18xx players will appreciate. Unfortunately, that means we're going to have to wait another month for the first of our new 18xx announcements (as we can't set a price until the components are finalized).

Over the next couple months, you'll also see new P500 additions from some of your favorite designers: Harold Buchanon, Jeff Horger, Ted Raicer, Volko Ruhnke, and Jerry White. And there'll be a surprise or two, as well. But that's for the next two updates. For now, I hope you enjoy (and order!) today's new additions while you look forward to more cool game announcements in February and March.

------------
New P500 ReprintAdditions.  We're adding two very popular reprints to the P500 reprint list this time:

Fields of Despair, 2nd Printing

Space Empires: Close Encounters, 2nd Printing

Note that contents of these, with one exception, will be identical to their 1st printings (the exception is that in the case of Close Encounters, there's no longer any need to update the Space Empires 1st Printing thinner counters, so that original bonus won't be included in the reprint). As usual, we'll also correct any known errata when we print.

Please click the links above to get more information or to place a P500 order.

 ------------
New Games from Europe. We now have the following five games in the warehouse. These are from Cerrigo, the company that used to be Vae Victis. As you'll see when you click the links below, they are continuing the quality and format of the Vae Victis ziplock games.

------------
One Special ItemWe have a special item that we want to tell you guys about - an opportunity to get the last 200 copies of a pretty rare wargame at a terrific price ($18 + shipping).

The game is Pocotaligo, 1862 &1864. It's a tactical wargame, loosely based on the original SPI GBACW system, created by Robert B. McNair, a South Carolina historian and game designer. It is a ziplock game that was originally published in 1997, and includes a die-cut countersheet, a color game map, Basic and Advanced Rules, and over a dozen scenarios between the Basic and Advanced games. I think it's worth the price for the included Historical Booklet alone, as I knew nothing about these two battles (Pocotaligo and Tulifiny Crossroads) before I learned of this game.

I thought you guys might want a link to a BGG page that has several play sessions of the game. You can see map and counter images there.

Pocotaligo on BGG (Scroll down the page to the Forums)

This is a collector's item of sorts. As far as I know, it has never been sold widely in our hobby. Mostly, it was sold through local South Carolina museums and  on eBay in very limited numbers. We were contacted recently by the designer's mother, and asked if we'd sell the last 200 copies of his game to help her create a legacy for her son. We're happy to help.

If you'd like a copy of this game, just click the link below to order.

Update on the Systems Transition.  So we're about ready to begin rolling out our new systems. You can expect that sometime in the next two or three weeks, you'll begin to see pieces of our new processes, as we'll be rolling them out (and stress testing them) sequentially.

The first thing you'll see will be a new website, which I hope you guys will like. It'll be tons more mobile friendly than our new site, but hopefully as good or better at presenting the information you want to know about our games. You won't have to do anything new when we roll out the website. We're using the same customer database, so your old password should work just fine.

I'll keep you updated as we add new pieces over the coming weeks and months. At the end of this road, we expect to have massively improved many of our digital and physical processes, most especially our order processing and notification capabilities.

Thanks for your patience through this very challenging process.

Design Updates:

All Bridges Burning - Designer VPJ Arponen

Following the entry of All Bridges Burning to GMT's P500 list this past December, playtesting has continued vigorously. I was very humbled by the level of support and interest gamers have shown for this game. Thank you all!

One thing we're focused on right now in playtesting is just trying out all manner of openings and strategies to see how the game balance holds out. Here one brilliant tester invented what we're calling the "Senate rush to war" opening. In this opening the white Senate faction seeks to transition the game from the build-up Phase I to the war Phase II of the game as quickly as possible. This they do by bringing the total number of pieces on the map over a certain threshold which auto-triggers the Phase II. We're wanting to see whether this throws in particular the Reds game out of the whack and allows the Senate to just overrun the Red Revolt before it even began. I've got a potential fix thought out already, but first more testing will be needed to see whether the fix needs to be introduced in the first place.

The Reds very nearly take out the main Senate army in a counterstrike in the province of Häme.
(Non-final playtest art.)

Another aspect of the game into which I've put a lot of time and energy lately is the development of the card-based solitaire system. I've just released the first version of the non-players to a bunch of testers to get the first reactions as to how this system is working out. I'm as excited as you are to hear the first reactions.

We've got lots of new stuff coming out in the near future on the various aspects of game play in All Bridges Burning, including more information the card-based non-player system, so stay tuned.  -vez

Bayonets & Tomahawks - Designer Marc Rodrigue

December saw exciting developments for B&T. The game pieces, markers, and action cards have been completely redesigned graphically in view of final production. In the process, we streamlined to fewer piece shapes: only triangles, squares and circles remain. It reinforces the cognitive link between the units and the battle dice results they generate. Here are a few samples of the redesigned art:
Also, a bonus introductory scenario has been developed, taking place in 1746 during King George's War, right after the capture of Louisbourg by Shirley's New Englanders. Another genuine piece of American history and it uses the same components as the French Indian War scenarios - only 4 new specific units were added. That scenario's low piece count and its focus on the maritime theater is a great way to rapidly learn  B&T's mechanics.

We are now moving on to a face-lift of the game board. As we enter the home stretch for the game's production, fellow game designer Marco Poutré joins our core development team. Realistically, a Q2 release is not feasible anymore, as there is still a significant amount of play balance tests to be made. We're eager to see B&T on store shelves, but never at the expense of good development. Buoyed by all that has been achieved lately, we accept gracefully the slight delay and hope you will, too. Vive le Roy! (Note on cards pic: Union Jack has been corrected since the photo was taken) - Marc

Cataclysm - Designers Scott Muldoon and William Terdoslavich

It's done! The final files have been signed off for Cataclysm. The game is off to the printers. We hope you will see the game on your gaming table by the end of March. It took us seven years to get to this point, or about one year longer than WWII in Europe. We appreciate your patience.

Proofreading is the last stage of game development. It is also the most tedious. Proofreading an article is no big deal; you just look for misspellings and double-check the punctuation. Games are systems. Any change you make to the rules affects how the rest of the game plays, so extra care and attention are needed to ensure consistency. By this time, everyone working on Cataclysm is very familiar with it, so spotting a mistake or omission is tricky. Thankfully, we had several people with the appropriate skills: co-designer Scott Muldoon, developer Kevin Bernatz, and proofreaders Kurt Keckley and Wendell Albright. Each mistake we caught at this phase meant one less question later from a puzzled gamer.

While the idealistic hope is an error-free game, we all know the complexity of war-games means things inevitably pop up. Our goal is that anything that causes confusions is minor and that the rules mostly address it, so if you do find something that makes you scratch your head in puzzlement, give us a shout on Boardgamegeek, Consimworld, or Facebook. We'll all be grateful if the worst thing you find is a misplaced comma.

Gallipoli, 1915 - Designer Geoffrey Phipps

We've made great progress on the artwork, looking forward to the scheduled release in April. With some careful mapwork we have been able to remove a large area of empty sea, freeing up resources for extra players' aids, designer's notes and the like. Can't wait to see it played at conventions this year!  Cheers,  Geoff

MBT and Panzer Series Updates - Designer Jim Day

BAOR & FRG Update.  In production for late February shipping. Above and below are the two box backs with previews of the new counters and maps.

Panzer Expansion 4: France 1940  Update.  Moves into this year's production schedule with a 4th quarter release.

4CMBG Update.  Completed development of all data cards, counters, and TO&E. Here is a preview of the Canadian version of the F-18B Hornet, circa 1987.

Tank Duel - Developer Jason Carr

The Tank Duel team has finally surfaced from our mini-winter-hibernation and we're heading to playtesting! If you'd like to help playtest, we're taking all volunteers, so please email Jason Carr at  jason.s.carr@gmail.com to get added to the playtest list. Multiplayer testing starts immediately, with Solitaire testing to follow in early February.

We've made lots of progress in hammering out the rules and finalizing the core mechanics. Testing will focus on game balance and scenario testing as well as our new Infantry rules. - Jason

The Battle of Rhode Island - Designer Mark Miklos

Progress report on side-2 of Battle of Rhode Island, "The Battle of Newport."

Thanks to the invaluable assistance of Rob Doane, Curator at the Naval War College Museum, I have been provided with excellent period maps showing the precise locations of British fieldworks and the deployment of artillery and infantry units defending Newport, Rhode Island.  This scenario models a hypothetical attack by allied Franco-American forces on August 10, 1778.  This "what-if" battle never actually happened because the French commander, Comte d'Estaing, reembarked his land forces and sortied his fleet in response to the arrival of a British relief squadron the day before the planned Allied assault.  Here we will see what that attack might have looked like if the British fleet had been delayed by 1 day or if the French squadron had sailed while leaving its land forces to cooperate with the Americans.

A problem with most secondary sources and some period maps as well is that they tend to show ALL British fortifications around Newport including those constructed in the days after the 10th during which the American army laid siege to Newport.  Determining which redoubts, trenches and revetments to include and which to exclude was daunting until Rob Doane came to my rescue.  We now have the correct ground and the prototype map is all but complete (and it's going to be a beauty.)  We already know the forces that would have been engaged that day according to the Allied battle plan.  Now we have the British all in their places to receive the assault.

We are very nearly ready to playtest side "B" in this two-battle offering representing volume 9 in GMT's Battles of the American Revolution series.  - Mark

The Last Hundred Yards - Designer Mike Denson

The maps are done and we are currently working on the artwork for the counters. We hope to finish the counters by the end of February and will begin working on the rules, charts, player aids and playbook by mid-March and the final production of the Missions early to mid-April. Hopefully, if all goes well we should be able to send it to the printer by the end of April. The initial module will have 12 Mission, 6 small, 4 mid-size and two large (4-6 maps). The smaller missions and 2 to 3 of the mid-size are complete. We still have a good bit to work to do on the balance.  Here is a sample of a couple of the game's missions:

I am really pleased with how the game plays. It is fun, challenging and an excellent simulation of the chaos associated with small unit combat.
- Mike

Wing Leader Series Update - Designer Lee Brimmicombe-Wood (via BGG)

On the eve of 2018, I thought I'd send out an update on my Wing Leader game system.

(1)  Wing Leader: Blitz  is in shipping limbo at the moment while we wait for the campaign map to be printed. Hopefully this will be resolved early in the year and we can get  Blitz  out to everyone. Those who already have their copy will get the map in the post, while those of you without should get a complete expansion package.

(2) The  Wing Leader: Victories  second edition is in a very advanced state right now. This includes new aircraft, counter and scenario content. New scenarios are still being tested, but are looking in purty good shape. The next step is to get pre-order numbers up. Though reprints require fewer preorders than normal, GMT aren't going to move on this until they have their production costs covered. Since GMT will be focussing on reprints of COIN material in early 2018, do not expect to see the second edition box and update kit before the second half of the year. I will be posting preview material of the second edition on CSW in the new year, once all the  Blitz  shenanigans are out of the way.

(3) The second expansion set,  Wing Leader: Eagles , is going up on GMT's P500 list in January.

As with  Blitz, the big feature of the package is a full-featured campaign module, titled  'Fortress Rabaul'. This recreates the US 5th Air Force bombing campaign against the Japanese naval base at Rabaul in the lead-up to the Invasion of Bougainville.

In addition to the campaign, there are 18 scenarios (more than  Blitz). These cover battles such as the He 177 east front antitank raids; Tu-2s in Operation Bagration; Finnish fighters at Tali-Ihantala; German schlachtflieger on the east front; RAF Coastal Command Mosquito strikes in Norway; rocket planes against B-17s; low-level B-29 raids on Nagoya; FM-2 Wildcats at Leyte Gulf; the Hungarian defence of Budapest. There is also a counterfactual scenario based on the planned Swedish invasion of Denmark, which was cancelled just before its D-Day by the end of the war in Europe.

No dates on this, either, but I doubt I'll be delivering anything for publication before August or September, so I am anticipating a release no earlier than 4Q 2018 or 1Q 2019.

(4) Finally, in preparation for  Blitz , a new VASSAL module has been posted. This includes an extension for the campaign in  Blitz  and allows you to play the campaign even if you don't yet have the printed map. You can download from here:

Anyway, that's where we stand on  Wing Leader  news right now. I'll be trying to keep you abreast of things as the year progresses. in the mean time, have a happy new one. Enjoy every sandwich.  - Lee

----------
Last but definitely not least, we have one update on a game that is not yet on P500, but is highly anticipated. It's an update from Designer Craig Besinque on the follow-on game to his hit Triumph & Tragedy.

Conquest and Consequence - Designer Craig Besinque

Work on  Conquest and Consequence  (the Asia/Pacific theater follow-up to T&T) is proceeding. The "secret forces" aspect of T&T is proving equally if not more important in CnC. The balance of strategic interest between the Pacific and China is providing lots of storyline variety. The suddenness and decisiveness of naval combat is adding plenty of tension and drama. Giving the Communists special powers related to the popular appeal and success of the Maoist Revolution is proving successful in providing appeal and balance for that 3rd side in a simple and playable manner. We have tried several methods and refinements of same to achieve this, with each iteration being an improvement. While the basic mechanics remain identical to T&T, further development work towards refining system elegance and play balance in this considerably different situation continues. We hope to P500 this design sometime this year, with components (and hopefully pricing) similar to T&T.  Best, Craig
