We have so much to talk about today that I won't waste any time on preamble. All you need to know is that there is magic galore in this issue of the Courier: genies for 5e, new Deep Magic, a new mini-dungeon, pre-orders for the New Paths Compendium, and so much more than we have time to summarize here!

Let's dig in!

What's New in the Kobold Warrens
Return to Zakhara in the first Al-Qadim supplement in two decades!

The "Arabian Nights" inspired setting of Al-Qadim is one of Kobold-in-Chief Wolfgang Baur's personal favorites--and one he worked on while at TSR.  But not counting Dragon Magazine articles, Al-Qadim  hasn't had a published supplement in 20 years.

Kobold Press has changed that.

Now that all Forgotten Realms settings are available for use on the Dungeon Masters Guild, Dan Dillon has created Genies Great and Small. This new monstrous supplement contains  21 new genies with full stat blocks for use in your 5e Al-Qadim campaign--or in any other campaign where one might stumble upon a mysterious golden lamp...

Within this PDF or print-on-demand supplement, you will find:
  • 4 elemental gen, minor genies that are servants to their betters!
  • The secrets of a bottled genie template and an exemplar to show its worth!
  • Three true genies unknown to most, from the anguished, watery nafurz to the swiftflying khamsiri of the desert winds!
  • Thirteen tasked genies, including deceivers, harim servants, oathbinders, miners, and winemakers!
Reviewer Tim E. says  Genies Great and Small is a "g reat update of some classic Al-Qadim creatures from 2E plus some brand new true genies and a template. I was immediately inspired to use these creatures in a 5E game as I read them. Well written and with the production values I've come to expect from a Kobold Press release."

Reviewer Jeremy R. says, "Another winner from Dan Dillon!"

Deep Magic 14: Elemental Magic Blazes to Life
There is no monarch, living or dead, more powerful than the elements. They are primordial, unstoppable. Unforgiving. To command their power is to command the power of all life.

I possess such power.

Deep Magic 14: Elemental Magic may be the greatest installment of the series to date! Within the pages of this PDF, you will find:
  • An Elemental Essence sorcerous origin, the Genie Lord warlock patron, and an Elementalism arcane tradition for wizards
  • Two new elemental magic feats: Negotiator and Survivor
  • 17 new spells, including rolling thunder, flame wave, caustic torrent, and spire of stone
Scatter scrolls with these new spells throughout your 5e campaign world as treasure for your players. Allow your warlock to meet with a mighty Genie Lord, and renegotiate their pact in exchange for greater power. And if you're planning to storm the Temple of Elemental Evil or take on the Elder Elemental Eye, well... the Princes of Elemental Evil deserve to have these spells in their arsenal.

Behold the Pride of Illyria in the newest Warlock Lair
A squadron of Illyrian Sky Riders were retreating on their hippogriff mounts when the forces of the Mharoti Dragon Empire wounded one of them, a minor noble named Menalcas.

When his mount died, Menalcas made his way on foot to a recently abandoned tower, hoping to avoid capture...

Pride of Illyria is the latest of our new series of mini-dungeons: Warlock Lairs! This lair features a map drawn by the legendary Dyson Logos

In our previous Warlock Lair, The Clattering Keep, we took you deep into a haunted fortress filled with undead dragons. Now, in Pride of Illyria, you will venture into a garrisoned tower in the heart of Illyria. This lair presents a good challenge for 4th-level characters as they scale the tower and do battle with the forces within.

Warlock Lairs are a bonus reward for $3+ patrons of Warlock. If you're a patron at that level, you should already have a code for a free copy of this Warlock Lair. Thank you so much for supporting us in creating new 5e content!

For lower-level patrons, or people who prefer to eschew patronage and pick up PDFs a la carte, Pride of Illyria is now available as a PDF on the Kobold Store.

Gem Dragons is back in print and better than ever!

"Eldenser is a wyrm of impossible age. His decrepit body lies a crypt in Waterdeep's City of the Dead, his lavender scales slowly fading to milky white in his deathlike stasis...."

Unlike metallic and chromatic dragons, the gem dragons are neutral: morally gray creatures to be used as ally and antagonist alike. Originally created in the earliest days of D&D, Kobold Press and author James J. Haeck has updated gem dragon stats for 5e. Now they're in print again and updated with gorgeous new art!

Ed Greenwood says: "There's something cool about dragons. A special sort of cool: great power, hubris, magic, wits to match the adventurers' own. Any Dungeon Master can always use a new dragon, either a detailed individual or entirely new sorts of dragons. In Gem Dragons of Faerûn, you get both.

"Gem dragons have been around for a long time, but this is the best and most detailed treatment of them I've ever laid eager DM's eyes on, and I met an old friend in its pages. Lovingly worked into the fabric of the Realms and fully realized for any D&D campaign, these wyrms are ready to leap off the pages and into your campaign. A winner! Two talons way, way up!"

This print-on-demand book includes:
  • 5 new dragon types: amethyst, crystal, emerald, sapphire, and topaz
  • Full stats for every age category from wyrmling to ancient, plus detailed lair actions and regional effect
  • The Ruby Dragon Sardior, paragon of gem dragons, plus his allies and lore
  • 5 more individual dragons of the Forgotten Realms including Eldenser, the Wyrm Who Hides in Blades and Viridias, the Umbral Mist, with their lore, motivations, and secret details

Gaming Roundup
The Kobold Press blog is full of incredible creativity by some of gaming's best authors. Drink deeply from this wellspring of inspiration!
Now, some fantastical and exciting news from around the web. Some strange, some mystical, all fantastic!

Those with a crippling fear of (real-life) creepy crawlies may wish to avert their eyes.

Dr. Ronald Jenner is the venom evolution expert at London's Natural History Museum. Let's hear that again: Venom Evolution Expert. This man keeps so many unimaginably deadly creatures within arm's reach, he deserves to be an NPC in your campaign! Surely you have use for a Venom Evolution Expert in your current game ?

Xanathar's Guide to Everything Launches in Game Stores

Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition is about 3 years old, and it's only just had its first major rules expansion! For reference, 4th edition only lasted 6 years, and 5e was already being contemplated at the halfway mark.

You may have heard about the contents of Xanathar's Guide to Everything (Amazon), with its numerous new subclasses, racial feats, new spells, and whimsical "common" magical items. To sample the book before you buy it, check out D&D Beyond's extensive interview series about each and every subclass (and a few other items) in this new book.

The first D&D game design position in over three years has just opened at Wizards of the Coast. The D&D community is in chaos as every qualified RPG author (and no doubt many underqualified ones) scramble to create the perfect resume to win the grand prize.

Wizards of the Coast is a remarkable place to work, and the tiny size of the D&D team ensures that they will be seeking the perfect addition to their tight-knit team. Best of luck, game designers!

That's all for now.  Happy gaming!
