The National Association of Black Journalists welcomes you to join us from June 20th - 24th as we gather in New Orleans for the 37th Annual Convention and Career Fair! Thousands of journalists, media executives, public relations professionals, and students are expected to attend to network, participate in professional development sessions and celebrate excellence in journalism.

 

All Learning Labs will be held on Wednesday, June 20. NABJ is pleased to announce that 2012 Learning Labs are now available for a $10 registration feeSpace is limited.

The rules of the journalism game are perpetually changing. Layoffs and buyouts have generated a feeling of helplessness among many journalists and media professionals. For older people in the industry, the job situation is of even greater concern. This session will offer attendees the tools to move forward and thrive in a competitive market.

Learning Lab: 4th Annual NABJ Entrepreneurial Learning Lab: Inspiring Success in a Digital World

Smart media entrepreneurs are embracing embracing new technology to launch long-lasting wealth-creating ventures. One example is the $1 billion sale in April of Instagram to Facebook. In this daylong session, those with a passion to reinvent content will explore concepts of building, growing, sustaining and selling profitable new digital platforms.

Looking for the latest in digital skills? Join us for a day of hands-on training with some of the top leaders in digital journalism. This session, split up into workshops, will cover the latest in digital investigative reporting, mobile reporting, social media, audience engagement skills and and web tools. Get on the fast track to better reporting with greater impact using the power of the Internet. This exciting day of intensive digital journalism training is organized by the Online News Association, courtesy of a grant from the Gannett Foundation.

Learning Lab: Starting Your Own Company: Visual Entrepreneurship

Times are changing for visual journalists, who are losing their jobs in newsrooms or in academia. This session led by the NABJ Visual Task Force will explore the business end of visual journalism with the intention of helping participants remain relevant and employed. Participants will learn to think beyond freelancing and explore details of creating their own media companies. Financial planning, branding, marketing and legal rights will be covered, along with protecting copyrights, forming partnerships, and billing and keeping clients. The session also will tackle questions that commonly arise, such as whether an LLC or corporation is more appropriate or how to write a good "For Hire" contract.

Learning Lab: Free Tools for Journalists

The variety of software and app tools available for journalists can become confusing and daunting. This session will wade through all that, and will cover Facebook for Journalists, Tumblr, Google+, Flickr, Twitter and more. This session also will demonstrate how these tools can enhance news stories.

Learning Lab: Branding U: The Student Edition

Sending a resume and cover letter through the mail is so yesterday. Job seekers need an electronic portfolio. This three-hour workshop will give participants strategies for using cutting-edge applications to develop a virtual resumes. The session also will offer tips for using Twitter and Facebook to promote a brand, and on creating an action plan that will have recruiters banging on the door.
