CHIAROSCURO FOUNDATION JOINS SENATORS GOLDEN AND SAVINO, ASSEMBLYWOMAN MALLIOTAKIS IN CALLING FOR INVESTIGATION OF DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH PROCEDURES FOR ABORTION CLINICS

New York--Apr. 10...The New York-based Chiaroscuro Foundation, which works to reduce the number of abortions in New York State, today called for a full investigation of New York State Department of Health inspection procedures for abortion clinics, after learning through FOIL and legal demands that more than 200 New York abortion clinics haven't been inspected in more than 12 years.

New York Senators Marty Golden (R-Brooklyn) and Diane Savino (D-Staten Island Brooklyn) have already called for an investigation, and Assemblywoman Malliotakis (R-Staten Island) has demanded answers as well, all following a New York Post expose Monday bringing Health Department negligence to light.

"This a serious breach in health protocol," said Chiaroscuro President Greg Pfundstein. "Thousands of young women use these facilities every year without any knowledge that they've gone uninspected for years.  In the few inspections that have occurred, significant safety issues have been uncovered. It is unconscionable that, armed with that knowledge,  the New York Health Department would then turn a blind eye to other clinics."

Violations uncovered are available here.

The Chiaroscuro Foundation believes that inspections, at least on a semi-annual basis, should be required by law.

"We need an investigation to get to the bottom of this," Mr. Pfundstein continued."We need to know what the current state protocols are, whether they have been followed, and, if necessary, what legislative action should be taken to protect the health of New York women."
