Paying it Forward
A Quarterly Newsletter of the Caring Community Foundation
Issue 4 - Volume 1 - June 2016

Welcome! The Caring Community Foundation would like to take the opportunity to share with you some of the new and exciting things we are doing in OUR community and the patients YOUR support impacts. This is our quarterly newsletter capturing the past, present and future of the Caring Community Foundation. Thank you for your continued support as we alleviate financial stress and burdens for cancer patients in need.

CCF Patients Served

Here are some of the patients YOU have recently provided immediate help:

  • 44-year-old from Raleigh with cervical cancer was diagnosed in September 2015. The patient had to stop working in December and has gotten behind on car payments due to no income. She received noticed from the credit union that her car is at risk of being repossessed. The patient's car is her only way of getting to treatment. CCF provided $750 for car payment.
  • 36-year-old from Durham with multiple myeloma was diagnosed in October 2015. The patient is the father of four young children between the ages of 7 and 12. All four of his children have behavioral and mental health concerns. There has been a lot of stress on his wife to make ends meet. CCF provided $204.84 and $198.33 for utility bills.
  • 3-year-old from Raleigh with Wilms' tumor of the left kidney was diagnosed in March 2016. The patient's single mother had to stop work as a CNA and is feeling overwhelmed with figuring out living expenses. CCF provided $428.89 for a Duke Energy bill and $440 for rent/mortgage.
  • 76-year-old from Graham with colon cancer was diagnosed in February 2016. The patient has a newly recurrent metastasis to liver (primary cancer was in her colon). She lives with her disabled husband for whom she is the primary caregiver. They live on a fixed income. This new recurrence has added additional financial distress to the couple as they try to cover cancer-related expenses including parking, gas, and medical out-of-pocket expenses. CCF provided $200 and $247.63 for utility bills.

Words from Our Patients

Each month we receive thank you notes from patients supported by CCF. Below are actual words of gratitude expressed by people  YOU have helped.

  • "I wanted to send a special thank you for your help and doing. Without you, I would have ended up on the streets if my rent was not paid. You are truly a life savers and heroes. I cannot wait for my battle to end and to start working so I can give back and help others. Thank you again for the wonderful things you do to help those who are sick and in need."
  • "Thank you so much for the assistance you provided in paying my property tax. It was a very troubling concern for me and we did not have the extra funds needed. I have been having surgery, radiation, and chemo since the beginning of my diagnosis in October 2013. I have stage IV breast cancer and a very difficult kind to treat. We have four children ages 22, 20, 17, and 7. For those who pray - please remember our family. I will continue to fight as I am given strength. Thanks again."
  • "Thank you so much for your donation to our family. It has been quite a year! You will never know how much we appreciate it! I have completed my radiation and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you again for your generosity."

Why Volunteer with CCF?

"I have known too many family members including my own mom who have been affected by cancer.  Thankfully, my mom caught it early and was one of the lucky ones, but I always imagine what if?  After her surgery, I told myself that I "would" give back, to give thanks for the second life that my mom was given!  It was then that reality hit me, that cancer can affect anyone and I figured why wait to make an impact?  I love volunteering and adding value to an organization that is more about helping others, it truly brings a community together!  Who wouldn't want to be around such inspiring individuals, strong survivors, positive fighters, selfless givers, and all-around fun people! Ultimately, I love helping where I can, making a small difference, and sharing in the celebration of life that other survivors are fortunate to live! CCF's impact is so unique! Yes, of course we all want to donate money for a cure, I am sure that would be better, but what about those that are fighting the fight now and in need of basic living expenses? CCF steps in when it counts and that's what I am proud to be a part of!"

Jessica Solano Volunteer - Communications Committee

"I found out about CCF through my mom and decided to go to a meeting to see if my video production services would be useful for the organization. After meeting Hannah and the team and hearing what CCF was all about, I knew that this was something I wanted to support. When a crisis happens, it is such a blessing to have a community to support you, and so I want to help get the message of love out for CCF."

Matthew Merry - Volunteer - Communications Committee

"Did you know that in 2015 the value of volunteers reached over $23 per hour? We have no doubt all our volunteers are worth this and much more. We have just two staff members, one full-time and one part-time, and rely on volunteers to not just meet our mission, but to reach more patients and grow our organization as a whole. Caring Community Foundation has a wide variety of roles for volunteers, and we welcome all skill levels! Whether you are a pro and want to help your community, or a novice looking to improve your skill set, we can put you to work, and value everything you give."
