EMD SD70ACe #1201 Fleet Unit At The CATERPILLAR Visitors Center Grand Opening

Missy and I have just returned from an overnight trip to Peoria, IL to photograph the EMD SD70ACe #1201 painted in a special yellow/ black/ silver/ gray revised demonstrator scheme so that CATERPILLAR could show off its ownership of EMD and Progress Rail at MinExpo held in Las Vegas a couple short weeks ago.  The locomotive was used in the mining exhibit as a number of railroads across the globe use the SD70ACe and its counterpart products in mining operations.

This past weekend the #1201 made its first operating run from East Peoria to the Peoria Riverfront area just behind the brand new CATERPILLAR Visitors Center.  The EMD SD70ACe 1201 lead a special train hauling three flat cars loaded with new CATERPILLAR equipment and an Illinois & Midland #273 Wide-Vision caboose.  The locomotive rolled through town with its horn blowing and headlights brightly shining through the early morning fog.  Upon arrival Billy Ainsworth of Progress Rail came out of the cab and made his way up to the VIP area where he and other dignitaries including Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, former mayor and Museum Board Chair, and other CATERPILLAR and local dignitaries spoke to a group of invited guests.

I want to share with everyone that the CATERPILLAR Visitors Center in Peoria, IL is a great place to visit and perfect for a destination trip.  Missy and toured the CATERPILLAR Visitors Center for a couple of hours after photographing the 1201.  Inside the Visitors Center you are treated to a great appreciation of the rich history of the CATERPILLAR brand.  Inside you will find countless interactive and hands on exhibits illustrating the wide variety of CAT products used throughout the world.  As with any large business this location helps to explain how products are created, used and how we are all effected. Inside the CAT Visitors Center you will find a really nice CAT Store selling all kinds of CAT Licensed clothing, shoes, hats, kids toys and many other products.   For those interested in visiting the CAT VISITORS CENTER please follow the link.  This is a great place to visit and the PEORIA RIVERFRONT MUSEUM is under the same roof so you can visit this location as well.

Just across the river from the CAT Visitors Center you will find a BASS PRO SHOPS store and numerous dining locations and hotels such as Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express to name a few.

This EMD SD70ACe #1201 (OMI #AA-2021) model will be one of the many EMD SD70ACe/ SD70M-2 units produced for many railroads and a number of EMD Demonstrator schemes with expected delivery in the Fall of 2013.  Please contact your favorite Overland Models Dealer today to place your pre-order as the production will be very limited and based upon pre-orders only.

Bringing up the rear of the special train was the Genesse & Wyoming owned Illinois & Midland #273.  The 273 is a former Chicago Illinois & Midland International Car Co. Wide-Vision caboose.  Here in Peoria the train is operating on the Genesse & Wyoming owned Tazewell & Peoria line that is the former Peoria & Pekin Union Railway that switches all of the CATERPILLAR product loads in Peoria.

Missy took this picture of me inside the brand new CATERPILLAR Visitor Center in Peoria, IL.  I am standing next to a mock up of a CAT 797F Mining Truck.  This massive dump truck stands guard over the entire display floor area and stands over two stories tall. I thought it might be nice to share an image of me since we communicate so often.

Looking down immediately behind me in the above image I captured this image showing a number of pieces on the floor and a showcar for the CAT #31 NASCAR race car that Jeff Burton races.

On the lower level of the CATERPILLAR Visitors Center  in this area you feel like you are inside a massive CATERPILLAR showroom where the 797F Mining Truck overpowers all of the other equipment such as the CAT Grader and Excavator near me.
