Present Music, Milwaukee Ballet Company and the Peck School join hands to collaborate on a unique performance. Four choreographers - Dance Chair Simone Ferro and alumna Dani Kuepper of the UWM Department of Dance, and Milwaukee Ballet Company members Tim O'Donnell and Petr Zahradnícek - will premiere new dance works to live music performed by Present Music under the leadership of alumnus Kevin Stalheim. These exciting new dance works will be performed by Milwaukee Ballet, and for Zahradnícek's work, will feature dancers from the Peck School's Department of Dance. Additional collaborators include: UWM Film Department alumna Kellie Bronikowski; School of Architecture and Urban Planning Associate Professor James Shields, FAIA; and the Office of Undergraduate Research. | Featured Choreographer: Petr Zahradnícek | |
Petr Zahradnícek is a native of the Czech Republic. After graduating from the Brno Dance Conservatoire, he joined the National Theater in Prague. In 1996 Zahradnícek moved to Germany where he danced with Theater Vorpommern, Salzburg Ballet and Stadttheater Wurzburg. In 2001 he decided to move to the United States where he danced with Colorado Ballet before joining Milwaukee Ballet.
Since joining Milwaukee Ballet in 2003, Zahradnícek has created many pieces for Milwaukee Ballet, The Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II Program and Milwaukee Ballet School & Academy. He has also choreographed three pieces for Ballet Memphis in Tennessee. In 2007, Petr Zahradnícek received a grant from the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of New York City Ballet. In November 2010, his piece There for You from Concourse was performed as a finalist at the McCallum Theater Choreography Festival in California, where he will compete again this year with 1 Run 2. |
| Featured Composer: Elena Kats-Chernin | |
Elena Kats-Chernin is one of the most cosmopolitan composers working today, having reached millions of listeners worldwide through her prolific catalogue of works for theater, ballet, orchestra, and chamber ensemble. Her dramatically vivid music communicates a mixture of lightheartedness and heavy melancholy, combining strong rhythmic figures with elements of cabaret, tango, ragtime, and klezmer.
Born in 1957 in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Kats-Chernin received training at the Gnesin Musical College before immigrating to Australia in 1975. She graduated from the New South Wales Conservatory in 1981 and was awarded a DAAD (German academic exchange) grant to study with Helmut Lachenmann in Hanover. She remained in Germany for 13 years, returning in 1994 to Australia where she now lives in Sydney.
