Scott Kidd, RUSVM seventh semester student presented research findings at the 37th Annual Eastern Fish Health Workshop in Lake Placid, New York, April 23-27. His paper titled, "Francisella noatunensis subsp. orientalis Pathogenesis Analyzed by Experimental Immersion Challenge in Tilapia Nilotica (Oreochromis niloticus)," is co-authored by Esteban Soto, DVM (RUSVM Assistant Professor of Bacteriology), Susan Mendez (RUSVM eighth semester student), Floyd Revan (RUSVM Research Laboratory technician), David Hilchie (RUSVM Histologist), David Marancik (PhD candidate in Pathology at University of Georgia), and Alvin Camus (Associate Professor of Pathology at University of Georgia). Kidd's paper was considered with 30 others presented by students at the conference and ranked in the top 5. Kidd has maintained his interest in research during his time at RUSVM. "I love the feeling of discovery," said Kidd. "We are literally discovering new things that the world doesn't know yet." Scott has plans to continue his research achievements throughout his veterinary career and will be the first RUSVM student to attend the University of California-Davis for his clinical year in August 2012.
To support the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Project, the students of the RUSVM Preparatory School decided to create calendars to sell as a fundraiser for the organization. Students as young as Pre-school age took photographs in St. Kitts and submitted them for judging and possible inclusion as a picture selected for one of the months. Calendars were sold to the RUSVM community and to visitors from cruise ships. The students were able to develop their communication skills as they interacted with tourists, explaining the sea turtle monitoring project and promoting conservation. During the 2011-2012 school year, the students raised EC$6,565.64. Great job everyone!
RUSVM recently donated US$500.00 to the Pastor Desmond Herbert Foundation, a non-profit, non-denominational organization geared towards bringing relief to the less fortunate in the St. Kitts community. The donation will help provide hot meals for needy families throughout the island as part of its monthly Feed the Hungry Program. The contribution falls in line with RUSVM's mission to improve the well-being of animals and people through community service, teaching and research. The donation will provide more than fifty meals in the community.
