Steve Lynn was born September 9, 1951 to Robert and Martha Jane (Smith) Lynn in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Steve graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1969 and William Penn College in 1973. After college, he taught at Sabula and East Central School Districts until 1977. After spending a year as a caddy on the PGA Tour he came to Iowa State University and received his master's degree in May of 1980.

He started as an assistant coach for the ISU Men's Track and Field team and became head coach in 1993. Steve was Big Eight Conference track coach-of-the-year and mentored countless Cyclone student-athletes on and off the track, including Olympic medalists. He continued in that capacity until May of 2007. Steve then worked as an assistant to the Vice President of Iowa State University and was Associate Director of the U.S. Junior Olympics for the Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau. He had been the Executive Director of Iowa Senior Olympics since 2009 and a managing partner with Race Monkey.
