This Sunday, in worship at 10:30, we observe the Second Sunday of Lent, which will be marked by the theme, "A Season of Grace." The sermon by Jimmy Moore is titled "The Grace of Testimony". The biblical text for the sermon is Luke 4:14-21. Music will be presented by organist, Pam Freeman, by the Chancel Ringers, and by the Chancel Choir, under the direction of Gerry Sousa.

ORDER EASTER FLOWERS TO DECORATE THE SANCTUARY
It is time to PLACE orders for Easter flowers. With Spring Break occurring soon and Easter on April 16th, order forms are available now. Please note the ordering deadline of Monday, April 3rd. The flowers you order will decorate the Sanctuary for Easter morning, and you can take them home with you after worship. The bulbs can be planted around your home in the fall and provide colorful blossoms next spring.
Order forms are available at the link below and at the Welcome Desk in Garton Hall. Please make checks payable to St. Mark's UMC and write "Easter flowers" in the memo line. You may mail or bring your order and payment to the church office or place them in the offering basket by April 3rd.

ST. MARK'S COMMUNITY IS PARTICIPATING IN
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY "CommUNITY INTERFAITH BUILD 2017"
When Habitat for Humanity builds a home, the owners pay a mortgage
that funds another home until eventually they build a commUNITY.
There are many ways you can become part of this project.
There is a limit to how many people can build a Habitat house,
but there is no limit to how many people can contribute to the building.
Participating faith communities include: The Bahá'í Faith of Bloomington, Congregation Beth Shalom, First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church, First United Church, the IU Interfaith Coalition (Muslim Student Association, Christian Student Fellowship, UKirk, Hillel, Project IMPACT, and Indian Student Association), St. Mark's United Methodist Church, St. Paul Catholic Center, and Unitarian Universalist Church.
SIGN-UP FOR THE INTERFAITH HABITAT BUILD "FRAME-UP BLITZ"!
The Community Interfaith Habitat for Humanity Build begins with a "Frame-Up Blitz" from March 31-April 2! In the spirit of this build, volunteers from each of the nine participating faith communities will build together each day. We look forward to partnering with Gustavo and Itzel Diaz, and their five children, as together we build their home and relationships with one another.
The St. Mark's Community has 5 morning and 5 afternoon shifts to fill for each of these three days. These are "Hammer Heavy Days," which require some strength and physical stamina. There are also opportunities to provide & serve food and other supporting roles. No experience is necessary, but builders must be age 16 or older. Other build opportunities will be added for future dates.
FOOD VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HABITAT BUILD "KICK-OFF" WEEKEND
Volunteers who can provide food are also needed for the Habitat Build. If you can provide some food, please contact Mary Beth Morgan or St. Mark's church office. Also, look for a sign-up in Garton Hall. Food needs include snacks, lunches, side dishes, desserts, drinks, and meal supplies such as cups and napkins.

All the proceeds for these cards support the 2017 CommUnity Interfaith Habitat for Humanity Build. St. Mark's is one of 8 faith communities and the IU Habitat Interfaith Student Coalition who are joining together with the Diaz family, to help build their home.

The confirmation program includes opportunities for group experiences, time with a mentor, trips to other faith communities, service experiences, and a retreat. Mary Beth Morgan and Jimmy Moore will be leading the Confirmation program this year.

All children and youth are welcome to participate in leadership roles on any Sunday, and especially this month in the March 19th worship service. Children and youth are welcome to be greeters (hand out bulletins), acolytes (light candles), liturgists (lead a prayer or read the scripture), or create the bulletin cover, share a musical piece, artistic talent or another leadership gift with the congregation. There are opportunities for all ages. Please contact Mary Beth Morgan if your child/youth would like to participate.

The Holy Land Revealed
"The Hellenization of Palestine"
Prof. Jodi Magness - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Lecture #10 is a discussion of Hellenization on the non-Jewish peoples in the area of ancient Palestine and the Jewish population of Judea.
The principle of the Hippondamian town plan is that when you build a city, you do not just build it randomly nor just let it grow organically, but, you give thought before you start building as to how it will be laid out. Certain things are laid out in certain places with all of this going back to certain Greek philosophical ideals about what the idea city should look like.
All are welcome at any point in the lecture series. Come join us for the presentation and the resulting discussions.

The Nomads are a generally progressive group who meet Sundays at 9:30am in Room 10 for fellowship and discussion of selected readings on issues related to faith, spirituality, or social justice.
The Nomads class is discussing the book Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, by the contemporary American poet/writer Kathleen Norris, which focuses on the "language of Christianity" and the author's own gradual conversion and faith journey.
The class meets each Sunday at 9:15am in Room 10 and all are welcome, with no preparation required.

The Bible Banter Adult Sunday School class meets in Room 11 each Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:15am. The class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a discussion-starter.
We look at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes explore a bit of Bible-writing history. We offer some thoughts on what the morning's sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture for our own lives, and often even delve into topics far afield of the morning's original topic. You are invited to bring some breakfast goodies into Room 11 and join the conversation.

CONVERSATIONS ON LIFE MEN'S GROUP
During March the men's group will be reading & discussing
Ten Prayers That Changed the World
by Jean-Pierre Isbouts. The book looks at moments in history where prayers offered by great leaders, from Joan of Arc to Martin Luther King, Jr., have lifted the faith of others in order to change the course of history. A different prayer will be studied each week, so visitors are welcome to join the group in Room 15 on any Friday.

LENTEN SERIES: FAVORITE BIBLE STORIES - SESSION 4
For the fourth part of this year's Lenten Learning Series, Rev. Philip A. Amerson will be reflecting on the old faithful but very timely Bible story: The Good Samaritan. The challenge he is drawing from Luke 10:25 -37, could also be titled "Invitations to Conspiratorial Living". Phil is an ordained UMC pastor. Rev. Amerson led St. John's in Evansville, Broadway in Indianapolis, and FUMC in Bloomington. He then accepted calls to be president of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and Claremont School of Theology. Phil and his wife Elaine recently moved to Bloomington from a small farm in LaPorte.

ST. MARK'S GOLF SEASON STARTS
Knock the rust off your irons in a friendly round of nine or 18 holes on March 19th when the St. Mark's golfers will begin their 2017 lessons in humility. Once again, you are encouraged to bring along a friend. We will try to organize the foursomes by average scores, but mulligans and other forms of Christian generosity will be given for those in need. Brought to you by Lotus Education and Arts Foundation in partnership with St. Mark's Nursery School and Gan Shalom Preschool, a FREE family and kid-friendly concert (a part of Lotus Blossoms children's programming) will be performed by Grammy-award nominated artist and Iraqi political refugee Rahim AlHaj. AlHaj travels the country to deliver a message of optimism and give the oppressed a voice for justice. In 2015, he was the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor for traditional artists in the United States.
