Happy National Small Business Week to America's 28 million small businesses! It's that time of year again! SBA is gearing up for National Small Business Week, May 12-16. Take a look at what's on the agenda to celebrate and help America's small business owners!

Business Structure Basics
With this basic guide, you'll be able to select the structure that suits your business best.

Of all the decisions you make when starting a business, probably the most important one relating to taxes is the type of legal structure you select for your company.

Not only will this decision have an impact on how much you pay in taxes, but it will affect the amount of paperwork your business is required to do, the personal liability you face and your ability to raise money.

The most common forms of business are sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation and S corporation. A more recent development to these forms of business is the limited liability company (LLC) and the limited liability partnership (LLP). Because each business form comes with different tax consequences, you will want to make your selection wisely and choose the structure that most closely matches your business's needs.

Does Your Business Card Make the Right Impression?
Creating a business card is one of the more exciting tasks of an entrepreneur.  It's a tiny piece of paper that provides a summary of your business, while at the same time facilitating new contacts and opportunities.  The creation (or re-creation) of your business card should not be taken lightly.  It is an important part of your marketing plan.  Make sure that it supports the image that you want to project with your business. Here are some tips that will help you create a business card that will open up doors for you:

Decide what you want to communicate.

Think carefully about what you are trying to convey with your business card.  What is the one word that you want people to associate with your business?  Reliability?  Fun?  Since the appearance of your card, including the font, color scheme and layout will impact the way that people perceive your business, it is important to keep your professional image in mind while making these decisions.

Why Women Entrepreneurs Are More Optimistic Than Ever

Whether they're starting out, raising capital or heading billion-dollar businesses, women are growing companies at a rate one-and-a-half times the national average. And while they still face the same challenges as always - access to capital and a challenging economy, among others - a study released today from the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and Web.com shows they're more optimistic than ever.

Up from last year, 92% of female entrepreneurs agree the stage is set this year for even more women to launch their own businesses . With 89% projecting high hopes for the year's overall business performance, it's hard to say a positive outlook isn't helping these ladies create one of the fastest-growing entrepreneurial groups around.

"Just in our customer-base, in the last three years we've seen the rate of growth of women's small business eclipse male small business," says Web.com CEO David Brown. "Prior to that, it was the reverse."

Entrepreneurship and Women: How We Can and Should Make "Female" an Unnecessary Adjective

Every business publication I pick up these days seems to feature stories about discrimination against women in the technology world. I have even been on the receiving end of this high profile press with a recent female entrepreneur spotlight piece in the the New York Times. The article was overwhelmingly positive. However, the intense scrutiny and attention paid to female entrepreneurs started making me feel uncomfortable and got me thinking -- you never see a male entrepreneur spotlight. Yes, I am a woman in technology, and to be honest, I frequently feel discriminated against or dismissed by the male-dominated technology world. However, I don't want to be a WOMAN in technology. I want to be a founder. A builder. A visionary. A person who changes the world for the better.

Focusing on gender alone misses the point for true entrepreneurs. It is HARD for everyone. Whether you are black, white, female, Hispanic or male, it is really hard to do something that no one has ever done before. If you don't believe me, read The Hard Thing about Hard Things. The tech press only features the outliers that have ten term sheets, instant viral growth and tech talent beating down the company 's door. Entrepreneurship, for the rest of us, levels the playing field quickly. Sleepless nights. Tough conversations. Big decisions in the face of uncertainty.
