End of the year tax saving ideas

With the holidays fast approaching, check out these great holiday tax savings ideas for entrepreneurs.

  1. Hire Your Kids: Instead of giving your kids money to buy presents, let them use their own money; money they earned working for the business. Make sure the job is within their ability and documented with a job description
  2. Throw a Holiday Party: Throwing a party for team members and clients is tax deductible. This is a great time to say "thank you" for all their hard work.
  3. Holiday Travel: You can write off the cost of travel as long as it's legitimately travel for business. If you are combining personal and business travel during the holiday, you can write off a percentage of your trip as a business expense.
  4. Professional Education: You can write off the cost of attending seminars and educational opportunities that make you a better business owner.
  5. Longevity Award: If you or your employees been at the business for longer than five years, you can reward that loyalty with a gift.
  6. Safety Award: Lack of safety can be a major expense to any business. So if you implement a written policy of safety, you can reward employees for meeting these safety requirements as a business expense.
  7. Entertaining: You can deduct the cost of tickets for a show or sporting event as long as you use the event as a way to promote your business.

Don't forget that those business-related books and subscriptions to magazines, newspapers, and trade publications are deductible.

The Edge Connection's Veteran's Scholarship Initiative provides scholarships to local veterans who desire to launch a business, or who need assistance with growing,
expanding, or sustaining their current business.

We're committed to giving back to those who serve our country by providing veterans and active military with the knowledge and skills to become self-sufficient by providing the education, support, and resources needed to successfully own and operate sustainable businesses. Veterans returning to civilian life face an enormous adjustment in the civilian workplace, an environment which is vastly different from the military. Entrepreneurship allows a veteran the ability to maintain a sense of power and to use his/her innate strengths, talents, and interests to become a financially independent business owner.

9 Mistakes Businesses Make on Social Media (Infographic)

Over the past few years, I've created social media content and strategies for some of the world's largest and most influential companies. I've also helped some friends tackle social media for their small businesses. I have come to the following conclusion: Social media can be really difficult.

Common assumptions often go like this: "It's only 140 characters. How hard can it be?" Take into account things like brand voice, posting times, imagery, campaign goals, broader marketing goals, etc. and on could say a tweet is never just a tweet.

Run Your Business Like Beyonc

Beyonc Knowles-Carter is at the helm of an international brand. She's sold 75 million albums as a solo artist, won 17 Grammys and has an estimated net worth of $350 million. No surprise she secured the top spot on Forbes' 2014 "World's Most Powerful Celebrities" list and made Time's "100 Most Influential People" list in 2013 and 2014.

Add to that dropping an album without any promotion or marketing and Beyonc proves to possess remarkable social media savvy and business acumen coupled with talent. Her unconventional tactics work: "Beyonc" sold 828,773 in a three-day period and is iTunes' fastest-selling record of all time.

Beyonc's impressive business model is even being studied by students at Harvard Business School. At this point, none of us can afford not to take a lesson from her playbook. We spoke to business, publicity, marketing, branding and organizing experts to find out how to apply Beyonc's prowess to your own business.

10 Steps to Becoming a Food Entrepreneur

Food. Yeah, it's kind of a big deal. It's a fundamental part of life -- we all eat! I love how food crosses all cultures and connects people. A place at the table brings us together to share a meal regardless of our background, beliefs, or language.

Now more than now ever, it's critical to change what we eat and how it's made. Food justice, food deserts, the environment, social impact, and health concerns make food an important topic. Food not only nurtures our bodies, but has the opportunity to make a difference beyond our plates.

It is with great appreciation that we thank Fifth Third Bank for their generous contribution in support of The Edge Connection's mission to promote financial independence through micro and small business development.

Thank you to our professional volunteers whose contributions allow us to provide expert level services to the entrepreneurs we serve.
