The Power of Investing in Women Entrepreneurs

The data is in!

Investing in women entrepreneurs results in new jobs, revenues and contributions to communities, according to our report

, Investing in the Power of Women: a Progress Report on the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Program.

The 10,000 Women Program was launched in 2008 by the Goldman Sachs Foundation to provide business education, access to mentors and networks, and links to capital for 10,000 undeserved women operating small businesses. Late last year, I and my colleagues from Babson College from the Center for Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership

The Edge Kitchen Recipe of the Month

It is the middle of Fall now and the comfort foods loved by so many are starting to pack on unwanted weight. What to do? Hearty soups do not always have to have heavy cream and butter for thickening to be good. Salads also are a great, healthly and delicious option as well.

Here is a soup and salad combo that utilizes all of the season's best assets, its fruits and vegetables. Enjoy without guilt!

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup pine nuts
  • 1 firm but ripe Bosc pear, halved and cored
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp. table salt
  • 4 handfuls mixed winter greens, tough stems removed, leaves torn or cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1/2 cup coarsely grated pecorino cheese
  • 2 Tbs. Champagne vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1 large shallot, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup nut oil, such as walnut, almond or pecan

Ingredients:
  • 4 Tbs. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
  • 2 butternut squash, about 4 lb. total, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 Tbs. brown sugar

Investors Are Hungry for Food Startups

Traditionally a field dominated by technology and biotechnology, venture investors have developed an appetite for food. With significant funding rounds for meal delivery services including HelloFresh and Blue Apron, food-related investments are on pace for the best year on record, with $617 million invested year-to-date according to PitchBook data. These startups make at-home cooking more efficient by portioning out ingredients and investors want their share. Following the success of the GrubHub Seamless IPO earlier this year, VCs are also looking at startups like Munchery, SpoonRocket and Sprig as the next phase of on-demand food delivery, with rotating menus from in-house chefs.
