Paying the "Boss"

There is nothing that gets people into more trouble in business than a lack of communication - this is especially true for early-stage businesses that are looking to raise money or get a loan.  If you are unable or unwilling to reveal the numbers that drive your business' success, you could lose the trust of sources of capital. Even when investors are friends and family, make it a regular practice to keep them "in the know" on your company's financial situation.  While it isn't always a pleasant conversation it helps establish credibility and gives them opportunities to help navigate through the tough times.  Remember The Edge Connection is here to assist with your projections and financial pro-formas; just call and set up an appointment with Dianne Lyle, Financial Planner/Access to Capital.  We could hold quarterly meetings to talk through the numbers; this will be both good practice and a way to get some additional support and ideas for your company.

Where Startup Funding Really Comes From (Infographic)

Prominent VCs and angel investors may dominate the headlines with their big sticker investments, but personal loans and credit - along with investments from friends and family - make up the lion's share of funding for startups in the U.S.

According to data compiled by Fundable, only 0.91 percent of startups are funded by angel investors, while a measly 0.05 percent are funded by VCs. In contrast, 57 percent of startups are funded by personal loans and credit, while 38 percent receive funding from family and friends. Want a more detailed breakdown of startup funding?

Why High Confidence Is Crucial for Entrepreneurs

Highly successful entrepreneurs have little self-doubt -- rather, they are more likely to possess strong self-belief. If you have high Confidence, you believe that you have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

Your certainty in your ability helps you start businesses, persist in the face of ambiguity and failure, and remain confident in meeting challenges as you pursue business success. You recognize opportunities and initiate action. While uncertainty may plague others -- who endlessly weigh the potential value of an opportunity, gauge the complexities in the environment, and fall prey to "analysis paralysis" -- a resilient self-belief leads you to act. And act quickly. You are so confident in your ability to control the events in your life and to manage your environment effectively that you know you will succeed.

The Myth of the Successful One-Person Business

There was once a time when it was just me. I was providing computer services. I was working a lot of hours. But I wasn't making any money at it.

Today, I'm making money. Why? Because I'm supervising 10 people who are providing computer services for me. I'm making money off of them.

Want to quit your job and be a freelancer, a one-person shop? I have bad news for you, and you need to hear it now, before it's too late. You won't be able to make a lot of money if you're running a one-person business. Maybe, just maybe you might make a living. But that's all. Why?

Female Entrepreneurship Growing Faster Than Ever

Women are pushing themselves out of the shadows today and taking their entrepreneurial talents to the forefront, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Over the last 17 years, women-owned businesses have increased dramatically. According to the State-Owned Business Report, commissioned by American Express, the rate of increase is a staggering 68% since 1997, with more than 9.1 million women-owned businesses operating in 2014, up from 8.6 million in 2013. This surging-growth pace, which has doubled in three years, has helped to generate nearly $1.5 trillion in revenues for women-owned businesses.

This Is Why Female Entrepreneurs Are Different From Their Male Counterparts

Female entrepreneurs might be outdoing men when it comes to running successful businesses this year.

About 40 percent of women surveyed started running their business within the last five years, and nearly 70 percent of them expect their revenue to increase this year, according to Bank of America's spring 2014 Small Business Owner Report.

While nearly one-third of the women surveyed said they think they have less access to capital and new business opportunities than male small business owners do, 18 percent of women said they think they have more access to clients than men do.

Investors' Growing Appetite for Food

Traditionally a field dominated by technology and biotechnology, venture investors have developed an appetite for food.

With significant funding rounds for meal delivery services including HelloFresh and Blue Apron, food-related investments are on pace for the best year on record, with $617 million invested year-to-date according to PitchBook data. These startups make at-home cooking more efficient by portioning out ingredients and investors want their share.

We would like to extend our great appreciation to O'Brien Productions for their in-kind donation of games for The Edge Connection's Summer family picnic this past August.
