"The Power of the Spirit "

Dear Members & Friends of Our Savior's Lutheran Church,

Just after our first service on Sunday morning, the skies darkened, the rain and hail fell, and the winds blew like crazy! I think most worshipers were able to make it to their cars before getting pelted by rain and hail, but I'm sure it was a white-knuckle drive home. The storm passed, and in its wake, plenty of debris and damage throughout the metro-area. I arrived home later that morning only to find our trampoline in a tree about a hundred yards from where it was! Once again, we were all reminded of the power of wind.

It was only two weeks ago when we celebrated the Pentecost and I spoke about the "rush of a violent wind" that describes the coming of the Holy Spirit in the second chapter of Acts. Seeing my trampoline in our tree reminded me again of how appropriate wind is as an analogy for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit may go unnoticed mostly in our day-to-day lives, but let's never underestimate the power it has and can express at its own will.

I want us to think again today about how the Holy Spirit has acted, or is acting, in our lives. How has it left an impression (like a trampoline in a tree) on your heart and in your mind? When has the power of the Holy Spirit caused you to stop in your tracks, stare, rub your eyes, and wonder if that trampoline really is in that tree?

Of course, as I shared on Pentecost, the Holy Spirit doesn't always act in such mighty and forceful ways, but it is always capable of mighty and forceful ways. Try to contemplate that today. Believe that today. Trust in that today.

This Sunday we hear more about our call to discipleship as Jesus reminds us that the harvest is plentiful and ready to gather, but the laborers are few. We are among the laborers called to gather the harvest. Come and see this Sunday what it looks like to be sent out to gather others to Jesus.

I remind you that we will worship outdoors on the back lawn of the church at our 9:30 am service. We will have some folding chairs available, but you are encouraged to bring your own more comfortable lawn or camping chairs or blankets.

See you in church!
