CALL FOR PRESENTERS!- Middle School Learning Festival
Tuesday, February 14 - Thursday, February 16th
Our annual  Middle School Learning Festival will take place on February 14th through 16th. The Learning Festival is a three-day experience--a break from the regular curriculum--during which students and faculty immerse themselves in thematic and Project Based Learning (PBL) activities.  One of the goals of the Middle School Learning Festival, is to connect KSDS students with their local community. We are in need of  presenters (or people who could connect us to presenters) who are willing to speak from expertise and/or experience on a variety of topics related to this year's theme: "The Brain."

Students will spend three days studying the following topics through teacher- and community member-led learning sessions at school:
  • The Brain and Behavior
  • Technology and Medical Advances
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Disorders, Diseases and Differences
  • Brain Games
If you are interested in participating, please click HERE.

Please contact Karen Booth at  [email protected]  if you have any questions!

Weekend Backpack Program--Food Donations Needed
Donations Accepted Through Wednesday, January 18
WE NEED YOUR HELP!   Again this year, KSDS will be participating in the Weekend Backpack Program. We will be packing food into backpacks to be sent to two city schools:  Tench Tilghman Elementary/Middle School and Collington Square Elementary/Middle School.  During the week, these schools feed the children--many of whom are homeless--a breakfast, hot lunch, healthy fruit, and a sandwich before they leave at the end of the day. But on the weekends, many of these children are hungry. With your help, these backpacks will be filled with enough food to last the child and his/her family the entire weekend. Click HERE to see what foods each KSDS grade is being asked to donate. Thank you for helping KSDS make a difference in our community!

Based in Israel, SACH provides heart surgery and follow-up care to children from developing countries who have congenital heart defects--with no political, cultural, religious, or racial preference whatsoever.  The organization also trains medical personnel from developing countries and has a long-term goal of establishing centers around the world where local medical personnel will be able to provide these life-saving services themselves.   For more information look HERE. Cash and checks (made out to Save a Child's Heart) are welcomed.

8th Grade--View From the KSDS "Top"
Daniel Stoller ('17)

I have been going to Krieger Schechter for 13 years so I'm an expert by now! I know every shortcut around the school, tons of faculty, all the Middle School students and a lot of Lower School students. What this school has given me over the past thirteen years is a sense of community, but not just any community. In this community, there is a strong sense of comfort and trust, which is what a true community is. Through activities like painting the mural, Learning Festival projects, building the playground together, and other huge group activities, I made new relationships and learned the power and the importance of teamwork. We would work together, all contribute to one big group project, and somehow finish something in a month or less that would take a year or more for one person to do.

One of the greatest things about having your school be your community is that you can see everyone every weekday. Every Monday through Friday, I build deeper relationships with people of all ages and that's why I have felt more of a sense of this incredible community the longer I have been at Krieger Schechter. I find it unbelievable that I have gotten the opportunity to make over a hundred friends, older and younger, and that is special to me.

Help the Sisterhood Bake ALL of Chizuk Amuno's Hamantaschen!
Baking Sessions Begin On January 20.  Look  HERE for a Detailed Schedule of Preparation Sessions and Contact Andrea Polsky at [email protected] to Sign Up.
Based on the wonderful response we got from last year's successful Hamantaschen Bake Sale, Chizuk Amuno has asked the Sisterhood to bake all of the Shul's hamantaschen this year--that's an extra 2,200 cookies!  The profits help our schools, so we need our school parents and grandparents to help make, sell, and of course buy these Purim treats.   For safety reasons, we are only taking volunteers who are 11 years and older; all children must also be accompanied by an adult.  Students can earn mitzvah hours for participating in making the cookies and selling them.

Please let Andrea Polsky ( [email protected] ) know which dates you would like to help.  We need LOTS of volunteers but due to space constraints in the kitchen, we can't have too many at once.  All dough making and baking will be done in the Krieger Kitchen this year.  The dough we use is delicious and the fun we have baking together is fabulous!  Please join us!
