Alumni Spotlight
Evan Margolis ('04)

Evan Now
Evan Then
I graduated from KSDS in 2004 with a bunch of kids that I am honored to still call my closest friends (I
have made other friends, but those Schechter kids are just too cool!). I am now a filmmaker and documentarian in New York and I often look back and credit KSDS with laying the foundation of skills that I use daily.

KSDS creates a warm, open-minded environment for students to enhance their creativity and critical thinking. In 2009, a few other Schechter alumni and I founded a community theatre in Pikesville. It's awesome! We work hard, introduce people to the thrills of being onstage, and bring quality shows to the community. Recently, I finished producing my first feature length documentary, Dear Sylvia . These are ground-up projects that take determination and leadership skills--two traits that I didn't naturally possess but that KSDS effectively instilled in me.

The Greek simulation in eighth grade was an inspiring time. While it seemed like fun and games to wear bedsheet togas to class, I quickly understood that the true purpose of the simulation was to become immersed in team building and public speaking opportunities. It gave experiential learners a chance to shine. The excess of pita and olive oil was also appreciated.

Don't get me started on "Bing, Bang, Bongo." It is the most helpful piece of writing advice that I have ever received. Granted, this may not be unique to KSDS, but it's the way that the teachers there institute these ideas which makes them so effective (Shout out to Mrs. Buchsbaum!). From an early age, students are taught essay organization, which later becomes essential for college classes and beyond. I use "Bing, Bang, Bongo" every day. It works for cover letters, grant proposals, and even school alumni newsletters. "Bongo" ends here.

For me, pursuing the arts has been exciting and meaningful, but very difficult. I feel fortunate to have been exposed to the supportive and challenging environment that KSDS has established and I will continue to employ the skills I built there as I move forward.

If you're ever in NYC, hit me up!
