Bunches of Lunches--First Collection
Wednesday, September 28
The countdown begins as we launch our "Bunches of Lunches and Beyond" program for the 2016-2017 school year on September 28 with our first collection!

We will be collecting lunches and delivering them to low-income and isolated seniors in our community. This is a wonderful program that puts into action some of the important lessons taught at Krieger Schechter, instilling in our children the importance of caring for our community and those less fortunate.

Brown lunch bags with instructions and "family talk" guiding questions attached will be sent home later this week. You and your children can pack the extra lunches and bring them to school on the collection morning. The mitzvah is even more special when the kids decorate the bags with pictures and stickers or add a personal note.

Please take some time to discuss the "family talk" questions with your children, to give them and us a deeper understanding of why we provide these lunches.  The questions will be found on a piece of paper attached to each brown bag.  Thank you for helping us to make this program a great success!

For 6th Grade--Thursday, September 29 from 9:40 - 10:25 am

Reminder - PARENT VOLUNTEERS are needed for 5th grade or for 6th grade to walk with the teacher and students from school to the Tashlich stream on Philips Drive and back. On these trip days, students going on the trips should wear their green KSDS field trip polo shirts and dress code bottoms (students who do not yet have the green KSDS shirts can wear regular green or white polo shirts).

HOWEVER, the 6th grade trip day is also the September Dress Down Day. 6th graders are welcome to wear dress down bottoms for their field trip day, and can bring a dress down top to change into once they return to school. However, they should wear their green KSDS field trip polo or green or white regular polo on the Tashlich field trip.

HaMorah Ellen Friedman

In my former life I was a corporate attorney, but during a hiatus for child-rearing I became active in the Jewish community and fell in love with Jewish learning.  Instead of going back to practicing law as soon as my youngest started kindergarten at Krieger Schechter, I found myself studying for a Masters in Jewish Education. Soon I was teaching at Rosenbloom Religious School, and in 1999 I started teaching in the Middle School at KSDS.

I drew inspiration from the experience of my own sons. My oldest was an overachiever to whom Hebrew came easily, but my two younger boys didn't have much "sitzfleisch," and both had difficulty with Hebrew. They loved studying Bible, however, and were often frustrated in Judaics classes with the language of the Hebrew, but loved discussing ideas. As I found myself teaching many students a lot like my own sons, I tried to make sure that each student, whatever his or her Hebrew ability, got the opportunity to study texts at the highest level of sophistication of which they were capable. Personally, I'm a grammar nerd, and I love exploring the intricacies of the Hebrew text. Not every student is going to share that enthusiasm, but all of our students find topics in Biblical texts that do arouse their passions. Whether it's a commitment to feminism that takes offense at Avraham's treatment of Sarah, or a profound compassion for animals that finds validation in the laws of kashrut, every student discovers something in the Torah that resonates with or perhaps even changes them.

Of all the classes that I teach, I think that my favorite is 8th Grade Bible, because in that course we revisit the Book of Bereishit. The students are familiar with most of the narrative from Lower School, and sometimes even wonder aloud why we are studying this book again. Nevertheless, when they approach the text as young adults and see how much more it contains than they could possibly appreciate as younger children, they are amazed, energized and filled with respect for the depth and wisdom of the Torah. And no matter how many times I teach a particular text, each year my students teach me something new about it. As we approach the Tishrei holidays and the renewal of the cycle of Torah readings, I'm reminded of the saying of the Mishnaic sage with the wonderful name of ben Bag Bag, "Turn it, and turn it, for everything is in it." ( Pirke Avot 5:22)
Shanah Tovah!
