Making All Things New: Bible Study for Advent

November 30 - December 21

Making All Things New is a book of daily devotions and weekly Bible study for the season of Advent, and includes activities for families to explore the season. Books will be available at St Michael's in November for $7.

Holiday Events

December 12 - Contemplative Advent worship with the Discernment Guild.

December 14 - Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, with Live at Five style worship at 9:00.Bob's Christmas Special - Christmas sing-along in Parish hall at 10:15.

Casa San Miguel

For the next three Sundays, December 7, 14, and 21, Casa San Miguel will collect Christmas toys for the children of people who come to the food pantry.  If you can donate a toy for a boy or girl, please consider something small to medium in size.  We will also accept gently used toys that your children have outgrown and we will accept warm clothing.  We started giving toys and clothes to food pantry clients on Tuesday, December 2, and we will give them out for the next three Tuesdays.  Thank you all, from the bottoms of our hearts.

Hospitality Team

Seeking ministers to help make coffee and clean up between the 9:00 and 11:15 services on Sunday mornings.  Please contact David Martin in the church office.  We need just 8 more enthusiastic assistants so we can schedule each minister only once every other month.  And who doesn't like coffee and conversation?

Campus Clean-Up

The congregation will participate in a Campus Clean-Up on Dec. 6th at 1:00 PM.

We ask that participants bring along some garbage bags and be sure to wear gloves.

This project shouldn't take more than a few hours. We will concentrate on the east parking lot and whatever else needs help.

Collecting Personal Care Items

Please bring deodorant, combs, and pocket-size bottles of hand sanitizer to St. Michael's.  At the December City-wide Youth Event we will be making Care Boxes for those in need.  The event will be at St. Chad's Episcopal Church on December 14 at 4:30.  Please bring these items to the church and place them in the donation boxes.  Other parishes will be donating the other supplies needed to complete the boxes.

High Scorers

The next monthly High Scorers Lunch is Thursday,  January 8, at noon in the parish hall.  We will not meet this month, December, due to the holiday crush.  See you in January.

Silent Auction

Don't forget ---  December 7 is the 23nd Annual Silent Auction and Holiday Fair for All Angels Episcopal Day School.  We can still accept donations for the next few days, but no later than Friday December 5th if at all possible.  Just about any item in excellent condition is acceptable - hand-crafted, collectible, new, certificates for goods and services, cookware, pottery, new clothing, baby items or toys - you name it, we'll take it.  But most importantly, we need shoppers to make the auction a success.  The auction will be open all morning, with bidding closing at 1PM.  We will have a bake sale, breakfast burritos and a hot chocolate bar. There will be a visit with Santa and lots of items to bid on as well as fellowship and fun. This year we will also be selling Boar's Head Holiday Hams! Stop by the table for a taste and take one home today! Also this year we will have a large selection of buy-it-now items that you can purchase on the spot!

Come join us!

Christmas Pageant

Anyone interested in participating in the Christmas Pageant must come to a casting call on Dec. 14 at 9 a.m. in the Children's Chapel.

Rehearsals will be Dec. 21 at 9 a.m., also in the Children's Chapel and a final dress rehearsal/pizza party will be held on Dec. 23 from 5:30-7:30. All children and youth are invited to participate and adult volunteers are also needed.

The pageant will take place at the 4:30 service on Christmas Eve.

Please contact Karen Wilkirson at 505-715-0310 with any questions.

So you want to join the Vestry?

We have gotten a number of questions on what is involved in serving on the vestry. Below is a list of minimum expectations:

   1. Attend Vestry meetings - The Vestry meets on the third Sunday of each month from 12:30 to 2:30. Vestry members rotate providing lunch.

   2. A member in good standing in the parish - Check with Kathryn Ravenwood (office administrator) on whether you are. Also, you should be a pledging member.

   3. Attend a weekend Vestry Orientation retreat - This is usually scheduled around the end of February or beginning of March and is usually held at the Bosque Center.

   4. Serve as Liaison to a Parish Ministry - Requires being familiar with the Ministry and help in writing up an annual report to the Vestry.

More is covered in the parish by-laws (http://www.all-angels.com/bylaws.html). Questions or if you are interested, please contact one of us (Bill Everett, [email protected]; Susan Langner, [email protected]; Kevin Tracey, [email protected]).

Christmas Cards

You've probably heard about the stained glass windows of our church being photographed, and various presentations of the photographs made available to anyone who is interested.

Bill & Elsa d'Ellis will be in the Parish Hall from 8 AM to 12:30 PM on Sundays, November 30 and December 14 to take orders for Christmas.

Posters and metal prints can be seen on the walls along the hall in the administration building.  There is a poster of  each window, and one which includes all ten windows.  Four dye-infused metal prints are shown to give examples of what is possible in this special media, which gives the prints brilliant luminescence and vibrancy of colors with almost a 3D effect.  These are just examples, as the window photographs are available in virtually any size.

The window photos are also available to be purchased in two different sizes of albums (which include all of the windows, plus details taken from the windows), in note cards and in various sizes of matted and/or framed prints.  Kathryn Ravenwood in the church office has samples and a price sheet for anyone who would like to place an order as a gift for Christmas, or for themselves.  You are welcome to call Kathryn at 345-8147 (Ext. 111), or Bill or Elsa d'Ellis at 899-1598, or email them at [email protected].

Las Posadas

One of the most treasured celebrations of old New Mexico is the annual celebration of Las Posadas-the reenactment of Mary's and Joseph's journey from inn to inn as they searched for a place to spend the night and give birth to their child. This year, Live at Five, is holding a Posadas Celebration.

We'll gather on Dec. 21, in the Parish Hall at 5:00 p.m., say a prayer, hear the story, and pick up a light to light us on our way from door to door around St. Michael's. We'll sing-in Spanish and English-as we act out that journey of so long ago. Ending in the church, we'll gather around the table for prayers and for Holy Communion. We'll close the evening with a fiesta-pinata for the kids and kids at heart and food for all. Bring your voices and a dish to share at the potluck.

Angel Tree

The Angel Tree in the Narthex is an opportunity for us to provide for the maintenance and upkeep of our physical plant.

  • Take a bulb from the tree
  • Write the amount of your donation on the bulb
  • Hang an angel on the tree with your personal thoughts on it
  • Take a small angel for your home Christmas tree

This year we are raising funds for a new heating boiler, phone server, computer, water fountain and repairs to the floor in the pre-school and cracks in the Nave ceiling. You donations will help us take care of these needs while they are still manageable and before the expenses become even greater.

Please stop by the tree after Sunday services throughout Advent and Christmastide. Volunteers will be there to help with your donation.

Thank you for being an Angel!
LGBTQ Book Group Forming

The LGBTQ Community at St. Michael's is forming a book discussion group.  Our first book will be "The Cross in the Closet" by Timothy Kurek.  The group will meet on Wednesday evenings beginning on January 14, 2015 and continuing for 5 weeks.  The book is available on line from Amazon and Goodreads.  Please contact David Martin at 505 345-8147 x 121 if you have any questions or need helping finding or purchasing a book.  EVERYONE is welcome to participate.

About "The Cross in the Closet": Timothy Kurek, raised within the confines of a strict, conservative Christian denomination in the Bible Belt, was taught the gospel of separation from a young age. But it wasn't long before Timothy's path and the outside world converged when a friend came out as a lesbian, and revealed she had been excommunicated by her family.  Distraught and overcome with questions and doubts about his religious upbringing, Timothy decided the only way to empathize and understand her pain was to walk in the shoes of very people he had been taught to shun. He decided to come out as a gay man to everyone in his life, and to see for himself how the label of gay would impact his life.

Icon and Pysanky Open House

St. Michal and All-Angels will be holding an Icon and Pysanky Studio Open House on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 10 am - 2:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall.

Relating Heart-to-Heart with Your Body: A Meditative Writing Retreat with Fr. Francis Dorff, O.Praem

Saturday, December 6, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

In this culture we are very prone to treating our body as a thing rather than as a life-long companion who has a lot to teach us about life.  This day will help you meditatively establish a person-to-person relationship with your own body as a way of personally experiencing your body's wisdom.  This work can be especially meaningful for those who are sick or are going through a major transition in their life, and for those who want to experience the importance and inner wisdom of their body. No previous experience of meditative writing is needed.  The retreat takes place at the Norbertine Hermitage Retreat, 5825 Coors Blvd. SW, Abq.  Lunch is included in the $55.00 offering for the retreat.  To register, call 505-873-4399 or email [email protected] by Wednesday, Dec. 3.
