Christian Mysticism

Feb 22 and March 1, 8, 15 and 22 - The great German theologian, Karl Rahner, wrote that, "The Christian of tomorrow will be a mystic, one who has EXPERIENCED something, or he will be nothing."

A mystic is, quite simply, someone who has experienced union with God. Unfortunately we tend to think that mystics are few and far between, and that only other people - not you and me! - are called to union with God. In the Gospel of John on the night before he died, Jesus prayed to God, "The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." (John 17:22-23) And the Apostle Paul reminds us that, "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me." (Galatians 2:19-20)

In this series we will look at the vocation all Christians have to become mystics, to walk toward union with God. In addition to presentations, Canon Travis will guide us through several exercises in contemplative prayer, which is essential on the Christian mystical journey.

Will Workshop

Saturday, March 21 - 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Parish Hall w/ Lunch Included

Do you know what the State of new Mexico will do with your property and assets if you were to die without a current well-written will?

Regardless of the size of your estate, creating and maintaining a proper will and end-of-life documents are ways to be faithful stewards of God's gifts, avoiding the stress of missing or out-of-date documents.  This workshop will offer an opportunity to learn about critical issues to consider in creating estate planning documents.  Space is limited so you must call to reserve a space - call (505) 345-8147 ext 111.

Casa San Miguel

We have had issues with our toilet at the food pantry and the church called out a plumber to snake the drain.  That didn't do anything so they sent a camera down the drain.  Dead end.  Last week, the plumber came back and dug up our sewer line, outside the pantry building.  Oh joy, oh joy!  They discovered that our sewer line was not connected to anything!  They also discovered two old, abandoned septic tanks.  Our sewer line is now connected to the church's line that connects to the city sewer and the septic tanks have been filled in.  Between the work that was done in December and the work last week, Casa San Miguel now has fully functional fresh water and waste water systems.  We just pray that there are no more skeletons rattling around in our old building, waiting to say "Surprise!"

Newcomers Class

A Newcomers class is beginning on February 17. You are welcome to join us that night for our annual Pancake Supper in the Parish Hall at 5:30, followed by an Orientation in the Pavilion at 6:30. The remaining classes will be held February 24, March 3, 10, 17 and 24, and April 7 and 14, in the Parish Hall, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

The class serves those interested in adult Baptism, Confirmation, Reception into the Episcopal Church or Reaffirmation of faith. It is also helpful for anyone who has transferred to our parish and serve as a refresher for those who have not explored these subjects recently.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Feast

Tuesday, February 17, 5:30 to 7:30

Join the St. Michael's Community in the annual consumption of butter and fat before Lent begins.  There will be pancakes (gluten-free, too), bacon, grilled sausage, strawberries, Mardi Gras beads, and activities for the young folks in the Parish Hall.  A free-will donation will be taken with all proceeds donated to St. Martin's Homeless Ministry. The first New-Comers' Class of the Spring Season will start that evening at 6:30.  All Newcomers are invited to eat pancakes for FREE before the meeting begins in the Pavilion.

Ash Wednesday

Wednesday, February 18

Begin a Holy Lent by attending an Ash Wednesday service at St. Michael's.  There will be three services in the nave with the imposition of ashes:  7:00 am, noon, and 7:00 pm.  The 11:15 choir will provide music at the evening service.  We are also planning on imposing ashes most of the day at the southeast corner of 4th Street and Montano.

United Thank Offering

Please continue to drop coins into your UTO "little blue box" each day as a token of thanksgiving for your many daily blessings.   During our two 2014 UTO Ingivings , the coins contributed by this congregation amounted to just under $3,000 that went towards the national Episcopal Church campaign.  One hundred percent of all funds collected from all Episcopal Churches for United Thank Offering will be combined and distributed as grants to further Christ's mission in the world. Every day we have a new beginning; a new blessing; and new hope. This is God's gift.

Lent Monday Night Movies

Mondays during Lent will be movie night.  Mondays at 6:00 pm, beginning February 23, we will gather in the Pavilion to watch a film.  Afterwards we will break into small groups to discuss the movie and how the subject or conflict affects our lives as Christians.  EVERYone is welcome to attend.

February 23: Doubt (2008) Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams

Sister Aloysious, the rigid and fear-inspiring principal of the Saint Nicholas Church School, suffers an extreme dislike for the progressive and popular parish priest Father Flynn.  Looking for wrongdoing in every corner, Sister Aloysisus believes she's uncovered the ultimate sin when she hears Father Flynn has taken a special interest in a troubled boy.  But without proof, the only thing certain is doubt.

March 2: Pride (2014) Billy Nighy, Imelda Staunton

Inspired by a true story.  It's the summer of 1984 and much of blue-collar Great Britain is on strike.  For one tiny Welsh village, the strike brings unexpected visitors - a group of London-based gay activists who decide to raise money to support the strikers' families and want to make their donations in person.  The two groups seemingly from worlds apart discover that standing together makes for a strongest union of all

March 9: Lord, Save Us From Your Followers (2009) a documentary by Dan Merchant

Fed up with the divisive bumper sticker mentality overtaking America, director (and follower) Dan Merchant donned his Bumper Sticker Man suit and set out on the daring search for meaningful dialogue and the true face of faith.

March 16: The Normal Heart (2014) Marks Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Julia Roberts

The story of the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s.  Based on Larry Kramer's Tony Award winning play, it takes an unflinching look at the nation's sexual politics as gay activists and their allies in the medical community fight to expose the truth about the burgeoning epidemic to a city and nation in denial.

March 23: The Way (2010) Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez

A father heads overseas to recover the body of his estranged son who died while traveling the "El Comino de Santiago" and decides to take the pilgrimage himself.

New Rector
The Rev. Joe Britton

After several months of patient prayer, careful discernment and hard work on the part of the Search Committee and Vestry, the congregation was able to gather in celebration as The Rev. Joe Britton formally accepted the call to be the new Rector of St. Michael and All-Angels via Skype at the Annual Parish Meeting, Jan. 25.

A Colorado native, Rev. Britton said he and his wife have always felt like 'westerners at heart', and they look forward to being in Albuquerque.

Though he has a track record as a gifted and experienced seminary leader, Rev. Britton said he has always felt like a Parish Minister and he is eager to be a part of the diverse yet inclusive St. Michael's community.

As for why he chose to seek the position of Rector at St. Michael's, he said he had long been aware of the reputation of the parish and the great work being done through the church and stated, "For me, St. Michael's is a glimpse into the future of the Episcopal Church."

More information will be available in the near future at http://www.all-angels.com/new-rector.html
