Contemplative Prayer - The weekly Monday evening service will hold the prayers and intentions of thechurch particularly at this time. This service is held Mondays at 7 pm if you wish to attend.

Friday, January 23 - An evening service will be held at 6 p.m. to provide a time for us to reflect on God's work of renewal and to inspire prayers for the parish and its leadership prior to the Annual Meeting on January 25.

February 6-8 - A weekend retreat at the Bosque Center will offer deeper opportunities to listen together to the Spirit's movement in our midst at this time.

In Loving Memory

Long time parishioner, Elizabeth Szalay, has died after a long illness.  May Light perpetual shine upon her. Her memorial service will be Feb. 7 at 2:00 with a reception to follow at Bosque School.

We pray for her husband, Ken Gilman, and all who love and miss her.

We say goodbye to another parishioner.  Donna Barone, mother of The Rev. Carolyn Metzler and Eric Metzler, died on January 13th.  May Light perpetual shine upon her. Her memorial service and Holy Eucharist will be held at St Michael's on February 10th at 1:00.

Casa San Miguel

We have a continuing need for personal hygiene items since these cannot be purchased with food stamps.  If you are considering buying something to donate to the pantry, consider soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and even toilet paper.  Also, we always have a need for disposable diapers - generally size 4.  All items are welcome and all are needed.

Annual Parish Meeting

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held after the 9:00 Service on Sunday, January 25 in the Nave.  Everyone is invited to attend.  Confirmed members of St. Michael's Church are eligible to vote for vestry members and convention delegates.  (Contact Kathryn in the parish office to confirm your status as a member.)

Potluck

There will be a potluck meal in the parish hall immediately following the meeting.  Please bring a tasty food item to share with each other.  A spoken liturgy of the Eucharist will follow the Annual Meeting.  (Vestry Candidate Bios included in the last section of the e-Noticias)

Sock Drive

We will be gathering socks for the next 4 weeks to give out at the February 8th breakfast at St Martin's. Any new socks will be welcome, but men's athletic tube socks are always best. There will be a hamper to collect these in the parish hall.

LGBTQ Book Group

The LGBT Community at St. Michael's will continue our discussion of "The Cross in the Closet" by Timothy Kurek on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 in the Pavilion.  EVERYONE is invited to attend and can join at any time - even if you did not attend previous discussions. Please contact David Martin at 505 345-8147 x 121 if you have any questions.

The book is divided into four sections.  We will discuss a section each week.  The fifth and final week we can discuss how the book impacted us and our lives.

January 21 - Part II: Chapters 8 through 16

January 28 - Part III: Chapters 17 through 25

February 4 - Part IV: Chapters 26 through 35

February 11 - Final discussion

Day School Director
Job Posting

Recently our All Angels Preschool Director, Becky Stewart announced her retirement effective the end of February 2015.  We are sharing this job announcement in hopes that someone in our congregation may know of a qualified candidate to apply to be our new director.  It is a fabulous opportunity.  Please share this information with friends and family.  A copy of the job posting is available at the church office.  Contact Maribelle Ogilvie, AAEDS Board Chair for more information ([email protected] or 505-899-4880).

2015 Flower Dedication Chart

The 2015 flower chart is now posted in the parish hall. Please consider donating flowers to enhance our worship on a Sunday sometime during the year. The process is easy: read the instructions; write just your name on the chart for chosen date; fill out the "dedication" form found in the pocket on the front of the chart and keep it to submit with your donation payment. The "dedication" form has spaces to specify who/what is being acknowledged and any special requests for colors or types of flowers. We will do our best to meet your requests, depending upon the seasonal availability of particular flowers or colors and compatibility with any other requests for the same date.

An Encounter w/ Thomas Merton

The Norbertine Community of Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey in Albuquerque's South Valley invites you to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the most influential Catholics of the 20th century-Trappist monk Fr. Thomas Merton, on Saturday, January 31, 2015.  "An Encounter with Thomas Merton: Themes of His Journey, and Ours" presented by The Rev. Brian C. Taylor will take place from 9:30 a.m. until Noon at Our Lady of Guadalupe Commons at the Norbertine Abbey located at 5825 Coors Blvd. SW.

United Thank Offering

St. Michael and All Angels will be starting our 2015 United Thank Offering (UTO) season on Sunday, February 8, 2015.   We have placed UTO "little blue boxes" and envelopes in the card rack in the back of the Narthex if you would like to get a head start.  For all others, we will distribute the folded boxes along with your service bulletin on Sunday 8 February.   We will ask you to return your filled "little blue box" on Palm Sunday, March 29.

Building one's relationship with God is a day to day ministry; as is the ministry of the United Thank Offering.  A ministry built daily through love, prayers, understanding, thankfulness, faith, hope and giving.   Each day, pause a few minutes from your busy life to reflect on your many blessings, and drop some pocket change into the little blue box as a token of your thankfulness. Combined with UTO contributions from other Episcopal churches, your change will multiply into millions of dollars to go towards the fulfilment of God's mission in the world.

Next Week and Beyond
Search Committee Progress

What happens next?

Please keep the Vestry and Staff in your prayers as the discernment process advances for our new rector. We ask for your continued discretion in not discussing any details you may be aware of. We want to protect the candidates' and their spouses' confidentiality. Both candidates are currently in Parish positions and want to have the freedom to disclose their process to their home parishes in the way that they see appropriate. Also, both spouses of the candidates are employed in positions that require discretion and they all have asked for privacy from the Parish as they visit with us so that their visits do not jeopardize their positions back home.

Albuquerque Interfaith

Albuquerque Interfaith held  its Legislative training session last Saturday and is preparing a schedule for member churches and other institutions to travel to Santa Fe during the upcoming Legislative Session.  Conversations with our legislators are a valuable tool to urge support for issues, particularly for public education funding.   A training will be held for St. Michael's members interested in participating,  probably travelling to the Round House with some parishioners from St. Mark's.  Please contact Ann Donohue (899-8929) or Don Noack (828-1180) for more information.

Lutheran Advocacy Mission
Bishop's Legislative Luncheon

The Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Bishop's Legislative Luncheon will be Tuesday, February 10.  Make plans to attend and be sure to make your reservation (or a reservation for a group from your congregation!) to attend this annual gathering which will begin at 12:30pm at La Fonda in Santa Fe. Rocky Mountain Synod Bishop Jim Gonia will speak at the luncheon and will also share a message with us during the Issues Briefing in the morning prior to the luncheon. The day will begin at 9:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church (1701 Arroyo Chamiso) with registration, fellowship and an opportunity to learn more about the issues for which Lutheran Advocacy Ministry-NM will be advocating in 2015.

The cost of the luncheon is $30 person ($25 per person when 4 or more people from a congregation or organization make reservations together).  If you are only attending the morning issues briefing, the cost is $5.  Please contact Lutheran Advocacy Ministry-NM (phone 984-8005 or email [email protected]) to make reservations or for more details. The deadline for reservations is February 5.

Vestry Candidate Bios
 Karen Cobb

My name is Karen Cobb and I have been worshipping in and out of St. Michael's for seventeen and a half years. As a child, I was raised in the Episcopal Church, but as a young teenager, I became involved in the Presbyterian Church, where I first heard my call to ministry, to which I was ordained as a minister for twenty-three years. When my young family and I moved here, I was Presbyterian clergy without an immediate call to serve a church.  Immediately, we found a common, richly spiritual home at St Michael's. Out of that depth, I have also appreciated the grounded, Biblical commitment to healing, nurture and challenge to grow authentically and to proclaim fierce inclusivity to all God's children. My husband joined the church and we attended the contemplative prayer group, first at the Taylor's home and then in the sanctuary. I baptized my son, Tore here with Father Brian in 1998. Our children attended All Angels preschool. My daughter, Clarissa made her confirmation here in 2012 and serves as an acolyte and a member of the New Members ministry. Over the years I have found the library a holy place to study and prepare sermons and the community, a holy fellowship to sustain life-affirming spiritual discernment. I have studied and preached and prayed and helped with Casa San Miguel and St. Martin's. I have kept Good Friday Vigil and walked to Chimayo with St. Michael's. I have endeavored to befriend every priest and deacon I have met here, for their holy vocation can be a lonely one.  As my life has unfolded, I have been nurtured by the Divorce Care group which I have also co-led. I have been a Servant of Worship for several years. I am now enjoying my fourth Dinner for Eight group. In November 2013 after years of discernment, I set aside my ordination vows in order to make my confirmation as a member of St. Michael's. Last summer I had the pleasure of representing St. Michael's and the Diocese of the Rio Grande as a chaperone to eight youth at the Episcopal Youth Experience in Philadelphia.  I make my way in the world as a child and family psychotherapist. It is with humility and gratitude that I now seek to serve as a Vestry member in the governance of our church, in this sacred season of new beginnings.

Growing up on the Navajo Reservation in Tohatchi, NM, I was fortunate to experience what I refer to as the best of both worlds.  I grew up with two religions in my life, being a member of the Roman Catholic Church and practicing traditional Navajo religion.  I was able to balance both, worshiping God and praying to Navajo deities.  I grew away from the Catholic Church, but still held onto my ties and teachings while frequently attending many traditional Navajo ceremonies.

The Holy Spirit first guided me to here to St. Michael and All Angels on Easter Sunday in 2004.  I renewed my faith, my devotion and love for our savior Jesus Christ.  I became a devout Episcopalian after listening to sermons given by Father Brian and Father Christopher.  I was confirmed by the Church in May, 2008.  Since then, I have met so many wonderful people (my church family) whom I dearly admire and love.  This community has been so incredible to me, which I deeply appreciate.  The clergy is amazing and has always been supportive, which makes St. Michael's extra special.

I would welcome an opportunity to serve on the St. Michael and All Angels Vestry.  I offer an extensive business background as I work with our many Native American communities here in New Mexico.  I am very grateful, humble and appreciative for being a part of this community.  I truly do love this place.  My blessings.

 Barbara Koenig

I have been a member of SMAA for over 20 years.  You may recognize me from serving as an Acolyte, usually at the 9 AM service.  I was on the Vestry in the late 90's and was chosen to be the Vestry Warden and later the Rector's Warden.  I then served as the Treasurer and was on the Finance Committee.  After some further service on the Personnel Committee I decided to take a break and give myself time to recharge.  Now it is time to serve again using my strengths in finance, employment law and organization.  I am a semi-retired attorney, the mother of grown children and the spouse of a reluctant church goer, Michael Maccini.   This my church home, a home I found after years of searching.  SMAA has given me so much and I hope to be able to give back by serving on the Vestry.

 Linda McCreary

17 years ago, my son, Elliott, asked, "What is a church?" I looked at his other mother, Ellen, and said, "Oh, man..." I hadn't been in a church for 38 years except to bury my father. Ellen was a faithful, but lapsed, Roman Catholic.

My life has changed a lot. I was baptised at St. Michael's, Elliott and Avery were baptised here, and Ellen rests in the columbarium next to the Sanctuary.

I have served on the Vesty two terms in those years. It is time again to serve God's people.

The community at St. Michael's and the Holiness of the space and the Sacredness of the air we breathe together has strengthened my relationship with God, my soul, and my children. I am forever grateful. I want to give others the opportunity to share in this richness.

It's time to go back to work.

 Don Noack

My wife, Libby, introduced me to St. Michael and All Angels 12 years ago.  I've marveled at this parish's resilience and commitment to serving both its members and the larger Albuquerque community.  I appreciate that it welcomes everyone and supports each of us during life's challenges.  This parish has been a safe place to understand and even struggle with my faith, providing us with so many avenues of spiritual development.  I see SMAA as a model of caring ministries and inspirational worship in the Diocese of the Rio Grande, even as it occasionally strains like all faith communities to live up to its faith ideals.  I am extremely grateful that I can share my gifts at the piano in the 9:00 music group.  I retired from Sandia National Laboratories after serving as the corporate ombudsman for the last 15 of my 34 years there.  Through my skills in listening and problem solving, I helped individuals and groups understand their competing interests and manage them in positive ways.  I also gained insight into non-profit governance serving on the Board of Directors of the International Ombudsman Association.  I'd be honored to contribute the skills and spirit I have to maintain an effective Vestry, assist in continuing the great work of the Search Committee to call a new rector, and strengthen the future of our parish.

Delegate Candidate Bios
Holly Seward

I have been a member of St.Michael's for seven years. I  come from  Massachusetts where my family still  lives. I work  as a psychotherapist with a specialty in treating trauma.  I have a Quaker/Catholic background that for me dovetails very well with the spirituality I have found here. I have served as a social worker for the food pantry, as a lay minister, as part of the icon guild and as a participant in dinner for eight. I was also a  member of the 9 o'clock choir. I currently  sing in the 5 o'clock choir and serve on  the 5 o'clock governance committee.

I have found many warm, loving, talented and dedicated people here who accept and sustain me.

I would be honored to be a delegate to the convention.

John Coe

Three things generally have influenced my life's involvements: my religion, my family and people from many places in the world, and music and the arts. I was born and baptized in Connecticut, attended Methodist, Dutch Reformed, and became a member of an Episcopal church in 1955. In 11th and 12th grade, I attended the Stony Brook School, a non-denominational and evangelical private school where I committed myself to the Lord, sang with the King's Men choir and, attended Dartmouth College. There I majored in music and was a 1962 graduate with a liberal arts degree. I was a member and active with St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Concord, NH, the Metropolitan Community Church in Omaha, St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Cheyenne where twice I served on the Vestry and sang in the choir, and in Winchester, Kentucky where I took care of my mother, served on the Vestry and sang in the choir at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Other activities involved participating with various international, national, state and local boards or organizations including Partners of the Americas, a program that Jinks American states with Latin American states or countries, Habitat for Humanity, the Wyoming Community Foundation, the Nebraska AIDs Project, five different choral groups, the Theatre Arts Guild of Omaha and Kiwanis International in NE, WYand KY. I hosted 13international students from 8 different countries. I continued to compose music. For 8 years in the 1970s, I held 8 week-long music workshops on Star Island, a conference center 10 miles off the coast of N.H.

New Mexico became home in February 2014. I am now a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, participated in Adult Newcomers and a couple of Animate evening classes, sing in the 11 :15 Choir and belong to a Dinner 4 Eight group. I also take weekly voice lessons and sing in the NM Symphonic Chorus.

Chuck Jones

I first attended St Michael and All Angels in 1977 and the parish has been a presence in my spiritual life off and on ever since.  I left in 1979 and moved to New York where I attended General Theological Seminary.  I returned to the SMAA community full time in 2011 after having lived in Santa Fe for many years.  In February of 2013 I began meeting with members of the Discernment Guild and through that process began the process for ordination.  I am currently a Postulant for the priesthood.

I serve at the altar as an acolyte, chalice bearer and altar server, and I am on the preaching rota for the 9:30 am Thursday Eucharist.  I am on the parish Stewardship Committee and recently helped with the Angel Tree Project, which raised funds for repairs and upgrades to St Michael's physical plant.

Professionally, I am a financial advisor with the MetLife Premier Client Group focusing on retirement income planning.  Within the greater Albuquerque community I have served on the board of directors of Casa Q, a new organization providing transitional living for LGBT teens at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

If elected as a delegate to convention from our parish, I will endeavor to represent the unique mission of St Michael and All Angels within this Diocese.
