Executive Director's Corner

Danelle Glasscock

Hello,

This past weekend I got dirty.  My family got up early on Saturday morning and made the ceremonial trip to Lowe's for supplies and Home Depot for paint.  A home improvement project that I thought would take a few hours was taking three weekends.  However, it was a beautiful Saturday to be working outside and as I painted and sweated, and my as my family sawed and nailed, it was fun to see our project progressing as the day went along.  In addition to our project taking shape, our sons learned some great home improvement skills and we had some family time to build unity as often our days take us in different directions.  There was a satisfaction of a job well done.

I thought of our weekend, as I thought about what many volunteers in our community also did during the Week of Caring.  They left their "day jobs" of sitting in meetings and in front of computers, and got dirty.  With their blue t-shirts emblazoned with the Regions Week of Caring emblem, they covered our community with time, commitment, sweat, pruning, painting, sawing, and nailing.  Our volunteers and their companies donated their time, not to just make their individual companies or homes look better, but to make our community a better place.  They did it to create a better life for all.  As the projects took shape, we hope the volunteers, in addition to having the satisfaction of a job well done, also learned some new information about a non-profit organization and also found time to build unity and relationships with a work team on a day away from the office.

As I look back with extreme thankfulness for every volunteer that got dirty during the Week of Caring, I'm also reminded of our theme that has been chosen for this year's campaign, "A Better Life for All.  A Better Life for You."  As we turn the corner from Week of Caring to campaign season, I hope that you will embrace with me the wonderful opportunity we have to give, advocate and volunteer to truly improve lives and create a better life for all.

Live United,

READ20!
Join United WE READ in building a literacy-rich community by reading 20 minutes a day with a child.  Reading is the basic tool for success in school, work, and life.  By reading 20 minutes a day, a child develops a larger vocabulary, a longer attention span, and better listening skills.  Read20 also encourages family bonding because if a family reads together for 20 minutes a day, 7 days a week, they will get more than 121 hours of bonding time every year!

Shepherd Center of Kingsport
by Johanna Morales

The Shepherd Center of Kingsport provides services to older adults to help them live safely and independently.  These services, which are provided free of charge include, transportation, medical equipment loans, minor home repairs, and assistance with accessing food.  The Shepherd Center works with several groups like 2-1-1 Contact Concern, churches, Wellmont's Parish Nurses, SeniorConnectKpt.org, First TN Area Agency on Aging and Disability, Kingsport Senior Center, and FeedKingsport.org to reach potential clients.

Recently, the Shepherd Center started a food pantry geared towards seniors.  This food pantry is unique in that it provides single-serving foods for their clients because most seniors cannot prepare and consume the large portion of foods that are given at other pantries.  Another unique quality of this pantry is that it takes into account the medical needs of each client.  There is a nurse that reviews each clients' medications and dietary needs to make sure they are given the proper food.

The Shepherd Center is a volunteer- driven organization that depends on their volunteers to provide services to their clients.  If you are interested in learning more about the Shepherd Center please contact Katherine Scoggins, executive director at [email protected] or by calling 423-392-4514.

2014 Week of Caring

The 2014 United Way of Greater Kingsport Week of Caring kicked off June 16 with the traditional Regional Project, which was co-sponsored this year by UWGK and Regions Bank.

On June 16, UWGK, Regions Bank, local United Ways, and volunteers from companies and organizations came together to "Improve Lives" of Small Miracles Therapeutic Equestrian Center.  As a collective group, the volunteers assisted Small Miracles by painting the indoor arena, landscaping the sensory gardens, feeding and grooming the 14 horses.

During the Week of Caring over 85 projects were completed by more than 1,000 volunteers.  Thank you to all of those that came out and together worked together IMPROVE LIVES around our community!
