Enjoy the Journey

When I was a kid, I listened to a radio preacher every morning as I awoke. One morning, he told the story of a train on a journey. Dr. Mathison explained that life was much more than the arrival at a destination, but that much of the purpose of life was to enjoy the trip. He explained that the destinations in life will always change. . .when I turn 16, when I graduate, when I get married, when I have kids, when my kids sleep through the night, when I get a promotion, when I get my dream job, when I'm

older. . .Remember, the secret of life is to enjoy the journey. I tell myself this daily as life seems to become busier and busier.

As I think about the journey, I enjoy seeing people who are inspiring about living their life of today to the fullest. I heard someone say recently, that the people who are the most successful are the ones who truly enjoy their jobs, the activities that fill their day. Knowledge can be taught, but passion comes from the inside. Over the long run, the persons who pursue the activities of their day with passion, will outlive, outlast, and outperform those with knowledge.

I get to watch a lot of folks in our community who do their jobs with passion--whether it's a paid job or a volunteer job.  I see them work tirelessly on behalf of others. I see them literally run to the other side of the field to help the opposition. I see them give up their own interests so that something bigger can come and take its place. I see them make sacrifices, often unseen, to build up those who may need a word of hope, a meal, a sense that someone does care about them in our community.

At United Way, we are on a journey. Short term, we are in the middle of a campaign season towards a destination of $4 million dollars. We are in the middle of the work this month, in the middle of the "asks." Our staff, volunteers,

and over 100 companies in our community who are running "workplace giving campaigns" are all working for the destination of November, of celebrating results.

At United Way we are also on a long-term journey. While short term, we are providing funds to assist with a meal for a shut-in, a safe place for after school care for a young person, a safe place for a victim of domestic abuse to turn, affordable medical and dental care for a family in need. Long term, we are providing a better life for all those who live and work in our community where everyone has an opportunity for a quality education, financial stability and good health--the three basic building blocks of life.

We invite you to be a part of this journey, to be a part of the change. While many people have been on this United Way "train" with us for many years, we invite you to continue this year. Your support is greatly needed and much appreciated. While there are others, who are just getting aboard, and we invite you to be a part of the change. To create lasting change in community conditions, to create a better life for all that live here, and in so doing create a better community for ourselves.

To join in our work, please give generously through your workplace giving campaign, go to our website www.uwaykpt.org and click DONATE, or call our office at (423)-378-3409, and we can mail you some information.   Thank you for being on this important journey with us! Celebrate the journey!

United WE READ
Volunteer Readers

Are you interested in being a volunteer reader for the 2014-2015 school year?

Our community vision is to ensure every child in Greater Kingsport is reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade. Currently, only 54% of children in our area are proficient in reading. To boost our 3rd grade literacy rate, we are working jointly with Kingsport City and Sullivan County Schools to continue the volunteer reader program at our four pilot schools. These schools have identified 2nd grade students who are close to being proficient readers but need a little extra support from caring community members who are willing to give 20-30 minutes of their time weekly or bi-weekly to read. This small commitment truly impacts a child's reading ability and ultimately his or her life. Our four pilot schools -- Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, Ketron and Sullivan Gardens - are excited for the opportunity to have volunteer readers mentoring the students who require additional reading support.

Please see below for detailed information on the four pilot schools that will be participating in the United WE READ Volunteer Reader program for the 2014-2015 school year.

  Agency Spotlight:

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee was formed in 1917 and opened it's first office with a full-time employee in 1942. Today, the Chapter has grown to six full-time and four part-time employees. The volunteers fluctuate in number and diversity of responsibility, but is usually around 800 people.

The mission of The American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The United Way of Greater Kingsport (UWGK) supports the Red Cross mission by funding three key programs. The Emergency Response Program provides assistance with emergency needs for disaster victims and provides emergency communication and support services to military members, their families, and veterans. The Community Resilience Program delivers prevention, preparedness, and education services to individuals and the community with a goal of lessening the impact of emergencies. The Social Service Program meets targeted needs concerning rent/mortgage assistance, emergency dental care assistance, and life essential prescription assistance. The programs fall within UWGK's focus on ensuring health, safety, and stability for people in our community.

Executive Director Glenda Bobalik notes, "Our 95 years providing service to Northeast Tennessee has been made possible by the generous volunteering spirit of those who live in our community and respond quickly to assist those in need. Support from the UWGK is a key component of our ability to serve the community. Working together we provide assistance to those affected by emergencies."

The American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee serves twelve counties and is now located at 660 Eastern Star Road, Kingsport, TN 37663. Glenda Bobalik, Executive Director, can be reached at (423)-378-8700. For more information, please call or visit their website at
