Please send your Wado event or activity with a photo of the instructor and/or event organizer by the 20th of the preceding month to get your information in this newsletter.
In addition, we will publish editorials, articles, or any other important Wado information. Please send a photo of the author with the article. All we ask is that you do not talk negatively about Wado organizations, groups, or individuals.
Instructors: Please forward this newsletter to your student base. Thank you. Sincerely, Volunteer Wado Staff

Disclaimer: Titles
One of the most difficult areas that this newsletter has to deal with is the use of instructor titles. We are very sensitive to this issue and do not want to offend or insult anyone. To simplify this daunting problem we will use the following guidelines with the use of instructor titles: a. The correct title of the instructor(s) must be in the article or seminar information submitted by the author or event organizer.
b. All captions that we place under photos will be:
1. Japanese instructors: Last name followed by the title Sensei.
2. Non-Japanese: The title Sensei followed by the last name of the instructor. c. Any title and name that is placed in this newsletter by newsletter staff will use the title of Sensei. We consider the title "Sensei" a very prestigious title. |

Martial Art Humor
Murphy's Laws of Martial Arts
The wimp who made it through the eliminations on luck alone will suddenly turn into Bruce Lee when you're up against him.
The referee will always be looking the other way when you score.
You will have trouble with the ties on your Gi pants when members of the opposite sex are in class.
The day you leave work early to make it to class on time, the instructor will be sick.
The instructor will only use you during demonstrations for joint-locking techniques.
If you have to use your training in self-defense, your attacker's father will be a lawyer.
After a flawless demonstration, you will trip on your way back to your seat.
After years of training without a single injury, you will pull a groin muscle the night before your black belt exam
. No matter how many times you take care of it before your promotion exam, you will invariably have to go to the bathroom when it's your turn.
If you have any martial art humor you would like to share, please forward it to us. We all need a little humor in this world |
Zen Stories
After winning several archery contests, the young and rather boastful champion challenged a Zen master who was renowned for his skill as an archer. The young man demonstrated remarkable technical proficiency when he hit a distant bull's eye on his first try, and then split that arrow with his second shot. "There," he said to the old man, "see if you can match that!" Undisturbed, the master did not draw his bow, but rather motioned for the young archer to follow him up the mountain. Curious about the old fellow's intentions, the champion followed him high into the mountain until they reached a deep chasm spanned by a rather flimsy and shaky log. Calmly stepping out onto the middle of the unsteady and certainly perilous bridge, the old master picked a far away tree as a target, drew his bow, and fired a clean, direct hit. "Now it is your turn," he said as he gracefully stepped back onto the safe ground. Staring with terror into the seemingly bottomless and beckoning abyss, the young man could not force himself to step out onto the log, no less shoot at a target. "You have much skill with your bow," the master said, sensing his challenger's predicament, "but you have little skill with the mind that lets loose the shot."
If you have any Zen stories you would like to share, please forward them to us. We all need a little Zen in our lives. |

eatured Article
"An Unexpected Occurrence"
Ray Hughes Editor
When several of us got together and decided to start this newsletter, the intent was simply to get Wado information, primarily seminars and tournaments, out to the Wado enthusiast. We had become frustrated with trying to find out what was going on in Wado and felt this newsletter would help all of us in this endeavor.
As I have put each newsletter together and asked our readers for feedback, I never expected much in return. But to my surprise, I started receiving a fair amount of responses.
Of the feedback that I receive, 90% is positive and 10% is negative. I am astounded at the high percentage of positive responses. I guess I am just used to hearing negative things about Wado groups, individuals, or politics.
The thing that strikes me the most about these positive responses is the theme that cuts across the majority of them. The theme of "how refreshing it is to read something that is not talking negatively about some group or individual". The funny thing is the 10% negative responses are doing just that.
It was then it occurred to me that the majority of Wado practitioners are very positive people. They are just silent. It's the negative people who are making all the noise (a unique revelation, right?). It is understandable that if all we are hearing is negativity, it would be easy to start thinking that things are more negative than they really are.
It has become apparent that we need to somehow get this positive majority to speak up. To help in this endeavor, it will be a mission of ours to continually encourage Wado enthusiasts to send in editorials, articles, or anything else that may benefit someone in Wado.
As I have started communicating with these positive people, it became obvious that they have a different philosophy than the negative ones. A philosophy that I thought just a few of us had, the philosophy "the student is more important than the Sensei". The negative ones seem to have the philosophy that the Sensei is the focal point. It is this philosophy that seems to generate all the negative concepts that many of us see: lack of humility, egotism, entitlement, power, and so on.
Anyway, for many years I have worked to separate myself from negative people, just like probably many of you have done. To be honest, it has only been the last couple of years that I have tried to stop my negative talk about negative people, if you know what I mean.
The point is that we, the positive majority, need to communicate more and ignore the negative people. Let's pass information between us that can help each other; such as teaching ideas, operational concerns, marketing concepts, business practices, and so on. This can cross organizational lines. The organizational echelon is simply what we all do for ourselves at the dojo level. Who of us wouldn't want any Wado school to be successful, regardless of organizational ties?
A call to action Like the silent majority, my students are more important to me than my Sensei. This is not a knock against my Sensei, I respect him greatly. He understands and believes in the same philosophy. We need to continue to help our students to the best of our ability. So please send in any information you might think could help another school or instructor. If you have a problem, send it in and maybe someone has a solution for it. Isn't this what Master Ohtsuka would want?
The mission of this newsletter is to disseminate Wado information to the Wado enthusiast in an unbiased and non political format.
We welcome any comments or input on this newsletter. Please send your information or comments to
